Last Saturday I was riding with my 3 older kids. Every ride I help them put their beacons on and check to make sure they turned them on. We had a great ride and as we were starting to head down of the mountain I helped my 8 year old zip up his coat and notice that his beacon is gone out of the holder. The buckle is still done up though but the beacon is gone. I will admit that he had a couple of get offs during the day but no more than usual. We back tracked as much as we could where we spent the majority of the time playing and could never locate the beacon but we did find part of the little safety cord that should keep the beacon on the person if it come out of the holder broken and laying in the snow. The beacon was nowhere to be found there though even with 6 people trying to locate it.
I have seen first hand the trauma that an avalanche victim can sustain and it really make me worry that anyone using this popular beacon may be in jeopardy of the beacon becoming separated from the person during an avalanche. I own 6 of the beacons myself and love the ease of use especially for young kids but this concerns me. I decided that I will also put the beacons on under our coats from now on to hopefully reduce the chances of this happening again.
Has anyone else had this happen or was this a fluke isolated incident?
I will also be taking donations to help replace my 8 year olds
