Track size: Length vs lug height

Hello I am new to the site and just got a quick question. Does a longer track with shorter lugs have more traction or rob less horsepower than a track thats shorter and has a taller lug height? ( Assuming width is the same).

Thanks for the reply the sled is a yammy vector mountain and the type of riding is on big mountains in deeeeep pow!:D oh by the way MERRY CHRISTMAS to every one.:)

i think it going to be more dependent on the the snow conditions.....so go big or go home 174 x 16 x 3 camo......dont get any bigger wider or longer!

Thanks for the info I certainly don't need 174x16x3 track. I was just wondering if a 162x16x2.25 track is to big for a 120HP 4 stroke. Robertyoke how is your MCX turbo nytro, would you ever go back to a NA sled?

Welcome.

Hum........... it seems I have been down this road.

I have a 03 RX-1 Mountain. Of course, it came with a 151 x 15 x 2" track. The sled struggled (more like sunk) in the deep stuff.

Next I tried a 151 x 2.25" x 15 Finger track. It was great in spring snow and on trails but, in the deep fluff not so much. There had to be something better?

So, in order to not have to change my drivers. I went to a 159 x 16 x 2.25 Skidoo track. The sled floated so much better that (no kidding here) I was able to ride right up to and dig out the guys riding Skidoo Revs with me.

I thought, if this works so well. Let's try a 162 x 16 x 2.5" Camo Extreme (at that time there was no such thing as a 174" track). So, I changed drivers and mounted it up. It works awesome and is still on my RX Ton today.

There are also some guys that use Polaris series IV and V tracks (very cheap on TracksUSA). They are 159 x 15 x 2.25". That way you don't have to change drivers. Look for "Kachess" on this forum.

For the money, I'd put on a Skidoo 159 or 162 x 16 x 2.25" track and not have to change drivers. You may want to change gearing. I think 19 x40 or 20 x 42 were good choices. Also, take a look at my posts on the subject on the above link.

That extra inch of track width made a huge amount of difference in the way the sled floats. Those big heavy fourstrokes need a larger footprint to keep them on top of the snow. You can see why yamaha put a 16" wide track on the Apex Mountain.

Now, if you want to know how to fit a 16" wide on your vector. PM me or do a search on the above forum link.

Best of luck

Years ago, I went form a 121x1.5" to a 136x1.25" track. What I noticed was better slow speed flotation with the longer track, but when on the gas, the taller lug got me moving faster and actually went better in the POW. My dad used to allways get mad cause he had a 136x1.25 on a Mach1 and my 121x1.5 500 would out climb him. I allways thought it was cause he was so heavy, but I think the track had something to do with it too.

im perty sure the track makes a big difference, cuz when i used to ride the ol' 92 phazer it had just the nubs left on the paddles, and a buddy we ride with had an indy 500 too(extra 10 too), but the paddles were substantially bigger, so i would get stuck quite a bit even though that setup had at least 100 pounds more weight then mine[im counting driver weights too ;)]

Thanks Frostbite and Banditpowdercoat thats exactly the info I'm looking for. The reason I want to know is because my dad's cousin would like to buy a vector but he thinks he only needs a 151x15x2. The vector I ride has a 162x16x2.25 track. (these are stock tracks)

when the snow is deep......no!

i have thought about going light weight especially at the end of the season when you cant really use 250 hp and the yamaha really shows its weight.

pump gas m8 would be really cool..... i have a boost addiction.

i think i would go with the 162 x 16 x 2.5 ce for your sled it will work really good. the 2.25 might give you a little more track speed but i think the deeper lug will help get the sled moving a little better out of the hole.

I've been following this thread and was curious... I've got the 159" track, 2.4" lugs, haven't had it out in the powder yet, what can I expect with this set up in the deep stuff? Everything is stock with the exception of a light weight can and simmons 2 flexi skis.

I have a 07 600 RMK. I put the 162 2.5 CE on it and geared it down. I love it. Engine is stock. That track works great. Best $1000 mod you can do to any mtn sled.

Mtgoat that setup should work really good. I have simmons flexi-ski on my Vector mountain and they work awesome. Your 159x2.4 track with the taller lugs should get the torque to the snow on your 900 RMK. ( tip: try taking of the sway bar so it's easier to sidehill.) I have a question for Frostbite: how strong is the Deltabox chassis, can I do a 10'-30' foot cliff drop without breaking it. I hope I can do at least 15'.

i would say no problem at all! the vector SE came with a 162x16x2.25 track stock outta the box so as long as your appropitately clutched you'll be fine.
