Track Porting

I searched and didn't find anything. Does porting your effect the floatation? I've got an 02 Edge X 800 with a 144". I do 90% of my riding in MN, 10% in the mountains. Is it beneficial for me to do this? Or just a waste of time?

Its a toss up. "Does it affect flotation"? No. A snowshoe has holes and it still floats. Is it worth it? In your case, probably not. Its for the guy that wants the last little bit of performance out of his sled. Maybe it saves a few ounces. Maybe the skid holds less snow. I did mine on a 700 and all I noticed was the track moved a little easier while on the stand. Didn't fell any better performance. My .02 (CDN)

well I have an 07 SummitX 151, and it has a ported track stock, and from what I have ridden it so far this season (2-3 feet of powder), havnt noticed much in loss of flotation in comparison to a 06 Summit with a powdermax track, but some other people will swear it trenches, the jury is still out for me, but I think BRP would have researched and tested them for how they perform in powder snow before putting it on their mountain sleds, but who knows. I think you lose 2-3 lbs in weight, and it makes it easier to freewheel since theres less resistance, but I don't know if it will make a huge difference either way.

I've read that a 136 with 2 holes down the center lost 4.5 pounds. I was thinking a 144 with 3 holes would lose 7-8 pounds. Which is 50+ pounds rotating mass.

well between the Ski-Doo 07 adrenaline with powdermax, and 07 X with challenger lite which is ported, both 151's, there is 10 lbs difference between the sleds, and some of that weight reduction I would attribute to lighter racing parts on the X, so a 144" losing 7-8 lbs might be pushing it, there was another thread on this somewhere, and on average I believe it was 2-3 lbs, but I guess you wouldnt know for sure unless your tried it.

grabed 2 drills with 1 1/4 hole saws on them, got a case of :beer; and called up a few friends had the track done in about an hour . I noticed that there was way less snow in my skid the holes really hepled move the snow out . id do it on my next sled or track before i even hit the snow :D

I did mine 04 159 hmx a couple of years ago . with a 2 and 3 every other with 3/4 inch hole saw..the biggest thing that I see is when we`stop ...and look at each others skid mine is always empty..in comparison to the other guys

ported my current track which is a 162" Maverick with 1" holes 3 across middle and weighed all the peices other than the rubber dust and was barely over 2lbs. Does seem to be empty of snow when compared to other sleds and have had no durability issues.

159 Camoplast. Two holes down the center 1.8 pounds. Second track Ive ported and no problems. Dino
