Track explanation

So im kinda new to owning a sled and its time for me to get a new track for my 900 fusion. I think it has a 121" track not sure how to tell but it looks stock. Can someone please explain to me how i know what track i need and also the different mods such as "fully clipped" "studded" and all the other terminology used to explain things i cant begin to comprehend. Also any opinions on brand and lug height etc would be much appreciated. Im gonna need something that i can ride on and off the trail and theres so many options

OK, one could probably write a book on this but I will keep it short and try to cover the 'basics'. Yes, the 900 Fusion (not Switchback or RMK) has a 121" track. How do you find this out.....well, there are several ways but the easiest is to locate a spec sheet on the sled; several websites have specs on sleds; you could ask a dealer. Trying to actually measure the track length is a little tricky.

If you look at the 'windows' on a track, you will see what looks to be a metal (usually gold in color) clip that is wrapped about the edge of the window. Some tracks will have a clip every other window or there are windows only cut into every other rib of the track and they are clipped. Tracks that have windows on every rib and each window has a clip is a "fully clipped" track.

Studding a track is typically a 'preference' thing depending on your riding style and where you ride. Trail riders are more prone to stud their tracks. Mountain riders never stud their tracks.

If you are going to replace your track and you are NOT going to get a factory replacement - the biggest things you need to watch out for are; track length (thats your 121" that you referred to), track width....15" is pretty common; and finally is the track pitch. The pitch is the center-to-center distance of the driver that is actually spinning the track. That definitely needs to match what you currently have.

Brands and types of tracks.....again, that is sort of a preference thing. Maybe talk with some folks in the area that you typically ride and see what they like. I ride alot of off and on trail in the UP of Michigan and I run a 1.352 Cobra track and I have been very happy with that. Granted, I am running a 151" Switchback 900 so there is a little more of a 'footprint' there.

You are on the right website for finding great information. Good luck!

Thanks for the info, im definately looking for something to go through powder better. Last year we had amlost no snow and when we finally got some (3 ft in one day) i couldnt even ride in it because i kept getting stuck. The snow melted shortly after that and i was pissed considering it was my first season owning a sled and i had just finished rebuilding the engine. Im still pissed, to this day i have about 5 miles of ride time during which my sled kept shutting down due to high temps. So if if i never want to miss my shot at big snow again would a 121 with 1.5" lugs be adequate? And i get the fully clipped part now but whats the point? i assume the clip helps prevent tear outs?

yes a fully clipped track will help prevent "ratcheting" which is your track slipping. here is my suggestion, either go with something like a 1.352 or go with a 1.75 backcountry track. if you are going to go to 1.5, id just make the jump to 1.75. it is more aggressive which will help a ton in more loose conditions, but it will still work great on the trails. i will plug tracksusa.com, they are hands down the best place to order a track from. i swear every time i order a track it is at my doorstep the next day!

You may wanna up it to a 136" if your buying a new track anyway a set of extensions is easy and....sometimes on sale with the track.:face-icon-small-hap

It does seem like a good idea to get an extension, track usa has good package deals. If i did get a rail/tunnel extension would any mods be necessary or just bolt on and go? Im think my temps were high because the trails were so spotty by the time i could get to them, hopefully not a problem this year.
