Track breaking on the outside edge

Hi everybody,

I am a long time two wheeler owner who never liked the way two plankers cornered so I did the logical thing and
just bought a 04 600 ho :beer;

Unfortunately while doing my pre first ride inspection I found a track problem, the track internal reinforcement bars wich run transversal to the track are almost all broken about in line with the outside edge of the hifax.

I also went to look at a used track for sale wich had the same problem !!!

There was also a 136 hawk at the same place wich was fine.

My underdtanding is that this should happen when cornering hard on ice/hard pack but neither the only remaining dealer in Quebec or AD themselves have heard of that happening.

So has any of you had this happen ???
Is the new track better ???
Can I just change the track and corner this thing hard without thinking about it or should I resell the thing rignt away :face-icon-small-sad

Thank you in advance for your thought on the matter and also thanks for a very informative forum.

Francois

This seems pretty unusual cause even the revs with 16in tracks i know guys who run no outside wheels and ive never seen one of them break a track like your describing and they do a lot of extreme and side hill riding . so dont know that this helps but im sure its pretty rare

On my 503, one of the steel reinforcement which is integrated into the track actually ripped off and torn off a little section of the track as well.

Can you post a photo of your track ? I'd like to see that.

^^^What he said, I wanna see pics of that track condition. It was my understanding that our tracks had flexible edges that rolled over the skid slightly when under load. The broken tracks I have seen were both 136", from a loose track getting pushed over the tip of the skid rail. One fast, one slow. The fast one obviously ejected the rider a broke 20-25 window/clips worth of track, crazy. The other was pushed in by a rock as the guy was taking off and it only broke one clip. Back in '04 the tracks were $750. I wonder how much they are today. Good luck finding a track! Can we just use a cut down from 15" sled track? They are everywhere...

i would guess i have well over 5000 miles on my 503, other that missing a bunch of lug, the track is fine, no broken bars.all i ride is hardpack trails,no powder, well maybe once or twice a year well have a foot of fresh snow.post a pic for us.....

Yes we can. That's what the longer track Snow-Hawks do have : a narrowed down Challenger Extreme track. You'll need to profile the lugs down as well if you run hardpack.

Thank you all for your infos,

Pictures would not say much as it looks perfect it is the internal bars wich are broken and allow the edge of the track to bend the wrong way and pushing the metal clips in the hyfax :(

cutting tracks down

Ive done this twice, its a piece of cake, and cutting the profile is not so bad either. I used a circular saw for the width and a electric knife to profile, just lube the blade and cut away.

And turn the track insideout when cutting the width. there is a ytube vid of some guys doing this on a table saw. Looks like it worked out well.
