towing sleds

whats the way you use to tow a sled out of the mountains with a bunch of new snow? my sled blew up today and tomorrow we are going back in with 2 sleds to go get it (hopefully) so from your experience whats the best way to tow a sled out. thanks

it depends..how rough/steep and if you have a single lane packed trail or a hiway....if its a single lane..turn the dead sled around backwards, set the track on the tunnel of the tow sled, disconnect the rear torsion springs so the towed sled sits as low as possible, turn the skis around backwards and turn the best rider loose, if its wide enough and reasonable hills, we use at least 200 ft of rope, 2 sleds side by side, with the rop run thru the ski tips,to the spindles, back thru the tips and out to each tow sled(you want the rope to slide back and forth allowing the towed sled to manuever back and forth with out draggin the towing sleds over....this works pretty good on hills if its wide enough, just need good riders who can pay attention to each other...also on really bad hills the rope is normally long enough to single up and get the towing sled over the top , which allows it to pull the dead sled much easier...

its pretty steep terrain in a couple spots but is usually heavily traveled but with this new snow it makes it difficult. also found out we have 3 more sleds coming to help us so it shouldnt be to hard...

haul in parts or a engine and fix it there

HAHA x2^^^ We are going up probably tomorrow Bannockrider. Got a Cat 1000 with a nastied up throttle cable about 300 yards from you. Hopefully it is not fogged in. There should be a lot more people, but it is a tough B getting a dead sled around up there. On a side note, the POW was sick up there today.

If the snowmobile does not free wheel, consider a Tow Buddy. Basically a plastic sled (that rolls up) designed to fit under the track. It is straped on and aleviates about 95% of the dragging force. On steep desents, tying a snowmobile to the back of the towed sled will be required for braking needs.

bwahahaha..team work..its a great thing....

Lots of rope and a snatch block... Hook to a tree up the hill - drive the recovery sled down the hill - pull the dead one up the hill - repeat as necessary...

PS - fix it where it lays...if at all possible.:face-icon-small-win

I have seen these in a WPS catalog i think. Looks like a great way to pull a sled out. Once the track is on the "sled", it should slide easily. Good idea on the braking issue going downhill too. Without that...it could be disastrous.

Great post!

thanks for the ideas. we got it out today with 8 people and 7 sleds and 200 ft of rope in 5 hours. what a day! but now i still have to figure out whats wrong with it. again.....

The Buddy Tows work great. I ride with the guy that actually makes these. We had to pull my 900 out last year and the track was not able to spin. Without a buddy tow i'm not sure how we would have got it out other then putting my track on the tunnel of someone elses sled.

The tow buddy is great but in a pinch we have used the GI rain poncho I carry in my pack that doubles as a shelter in case of an unplanned over night stay. Might not work so well over rough ground but slides good over fresh snow and takes up little room in your pack.
