Towing Question

I'm looking at buying a 7x27 foot inclosed trailer and wonder how it will compair to pulling my open 4 place. We put a lot of miles on traveling from MN out west so I want something that will cut through the wind efficiently.
Thanks

the most important single factor is make sure it's a v-nose...after that how much weight is being carried...i don't find that steel or aluminum makes a lot of difference (3-400 lbs)....and of course, how fast you drive....i find 65 is a pretty good comprimise between time and fuel.....don't use cruise control if the road is slick....and an enclosed will cause you trouble in a cross-wind, especially on a slick road

I have an 8x24, it pulls much harder than an open 4 place. It is one that the wheel wells come up inside the trailer. I did that to keep it lower to the ground for easier pulling and loading. I can get 5 151 sleds in with no problem. If I had it to do again I would look for one of those Hi/lows that change the height of the roof. with a 27 foot trailer I would think it would catch alot of side wind and whip on you. I find that mine pulls better in a cross wind if I load as much of the weight of luggage and tools over the wheels of the trailer. Just my 25 cents.

I'm mainly wondering about heading across I90 through MN, and South Dakota holding 65-70MPH.Will it be much harder then an open to maintain that speed. Right now I don't want much more resistance then my open has. We would be pulling it with a 6.0 liter pickup or a 5.3 Suburban.

The 5.3 will hate it, mine does.

probably 3000 pounds more weight in the enclosed---as stated the 5.3 will not do well and the 6.0 will know its there for sure---i have a 8.5 x 27 and the dmax tows it great but the cross winds will whip it pretty good even with sway bars

You will notice it more then an open trailer that is for sure. More weight and more frontal surface area which relates to wind drag. It will also be more effected by the cross wind.

I think you have the right idea with the 7' wide. Lower deck height, better handling, lower overall height, usually bigger/larger diameter wheels which means better handling/towing and so on, plus you can see beside it on what is going on behind you without having to add extensions on your mirrors. (if your rig doesn't already come equiped with them)

Thanks for input. I was hoping with a 7' wide the wind drag wouldn't be too bad. I hate to spend the money on an enclosed only to find out my Truck isn't strong enough to pull it.

i never pulled a 4 place enclosed .but i do pull 4 place open 2000 gmc 4 wheel drive 72 mph and get 17 mpg .ied say save your cash buy a good cover and mod the sled

With the way fuel prices are and the distances we travel to get to the snow I would go open. It leaves more on the table for fuel, mods, and whatever else you want. Sure the sled gets a bit more beat up but that's what happens when it's being rode isn't it?

Don't expect good miledge pulling an enclosed trailer ...

The drag that even the v-nose trailers produce is huge.

I have a 'taller' enclosed, but what's interesting to me is that I get absolutley identical miledge pulling the trailer empty as I do when it has sleds in it ...

Your 5.3 will be contacting you to renogotiate it's contract after it's first trip. Big diff between and open and enclosed. Weight & wind resistance. Take a piece of cardboard and go outside when their is a breeze. Hold it level (like a plate) and then hold it up like a sail. Head winds aren't so bad you cut right into them. High sidewinds suck! First time you catch one with a little glaze on the road the guys in the truck behind you will be able to hear your ballon knot slam shut:D

I went from a open two place to a 8.5x27. The Hemi pulled it but over 70mph it was not nice to it at all. 80mph was not possible, under 70 was like 6-8mpg but if you babied it it would do it. You will need a desiel to pull it that far. If you over load your gasser at high rpms you will be buying a new transmission.
