We rode yesterday in 5' plus of fresh powder and had an awesome time, however, I am really feeling the need for more power. I have decided that LT is definitely the way I am going to have to go to ride the areas we ride and with the people I ride with. 450 motocross bikes work well enough, but I know what the endline will be that much sustained wide open hours. ?????$$$$$ I have to think that a cr or kx 500 built into a modern chassis would be the best. I have found a thread on Ktm talk where guy built hybrids using both cr and kx motors. I have most of the parts to do it. Can someone tell me why I shouldn't? I know some of you have done AF hybrids and such. What were your experiences? I have found some pretty affordable donor bikes locally and a frame shipped to my door for $150.

Do it.

I have a kx500af with an Lt kit

Some things to sort out:

-power for lights. Make sure you have the watts.

-alt compensation. You can use an intelajet and tune with egt's. Egt takes power though too. Holtzman makes some auto compensator. That's what I would do next time.

-carb ice. Some guys saw the KTM heater works but it didn't for me. It also takes some power. I wrapped my carb in coolant line. Works perfect and no elect draw.

Those are the highlights I can think of. It does take a bit to get the pipe to temp, so don't try a hero line right after its been sitting for awhile. Let it idle, rev it up a few times and you're ready.

Coolant temp was not an issue for me. Runs great, no t stat.

Maybe go up a heat range on the plug. They see a lot more wide open than in an mx bike. I run Br9ecmix

I starting to think i should have gone with a two stroke. The only thing is i really never see motors for a good price, 2300 to 3200 thats to much. Thinking for that price might throw on a boondocer. I can say i have seen kx bikes priced as much as motors, kind of tells you what some people are only after

Excellent... Thanks Joel. A Two stroke is born to run WOT for days... not so with a 4 stroke.

I am familiar with the intellijet, and planned on using one on a taper bored 39mm pwk. Do I really need the egts? I figured I could seat of the pants tune it. Am I better off with a kx or cr? What years to avoid? How much more performance Will I have over a good running 450?

Cr has no power valves, steel liner, stronger transmission and more parts availability. Kx has power valves, nikisil liner and stock can run better than a cr. When everything is right the KX can be considered better. When things go wrong the CR is cheaper to work on, easier to work on and parts availibilty is unprecedented for any bike, just check ebay to verify. Stock rear wheel hp is around 50-55, torque is the shocker a stock CR 500 will make more torque than a modded XR650R. Modded 60-65hp is very realistic 70+ is possible.

So on the hill, what does that translate into? Say 60 hp and , what 15 lbs lighter? I would think that as long as the jetting is close, the 500 should have a large advantage.

Stock(ish) the KX might have an advantage. Its got the nic liner and powervalves. Nic is real hard and lots of times if you smear a piston it can be cleaned up as long as a ring doesn't catch a port and make a mess. Problem is the exhaust port was designed by an engineer not an engine guy.

The Cr has the steel liner. On a long pull, steel doesn't transfer heat as well as a nic liner and will lose power. Steel is softer and if a piston let's go you'll need to over bore it, but that's not a huge job. The exh port is layed out much smarter if you want to start making big changes though. And there's more aftermarket goodies around.

I'm on my phone so i'm not going to paste the link but if you go to dailymotion.com and search kx500af snowbike I put a vid from last weekend up there. Gives you an idea of how they go.

I would think fuel economy is probably one of the bigger disadvantages.

Can you guys give an idea of how much fuel you guys are using in the 500's?

Kell

Dunno. Fuel seems reasonable. I put a larger Baja tank on mine. That plus the stock can on the back will go all of most days.

Did a 65mile day once and needed another gallon or so above that.

Ya they vibrate some and they don't start super-easy. If there's not a pair of carhartts in your house somewhere, might not be the bike for you.

They start like butta' if you know what your doing.

I agree my 500 usually starts within 3 kicks if temps are above freezing and once warmed up it's a one kick bike. If it's cold out it can take a few more kicks to get going but that seems to be the same story with every bike.
