Hi Mudhound

Here's the deal. One of our old decks (about 4 years old) was sent over to China, they copied all of our extrusions that Marathon designed, created and patented - all to create a knock-off Marathon. We've been building decks for 10 years now and we've spent that time developing newer and better versions every year. I don't have a problem with any other deck builder when they create their own designs but this is nothing but a poor imitation of our designs.

Anyone buying any deck should think about who makes it and who backs it up. We employ welders here to build our decks, not someone in China who works for a couple of yuan a day. We buy our raw material from domestic extruders and we support many other local businesses. Marathon is a deck designed and built by sledders for sledders. In additon to this we FULLY support the year-round motorsports industry.

Think about supporting the well-built products developed and built in North America first! You don't have to buy one of our decks but please consider who builds and backs up your deck before you lay down your money.
Please feel free to ask me any questions you might have.

Happy Sledding

Well said Chelle. Kinda sucks when someone try to copy your product just sell it a little cheaper and a little cheaper is what you get... I have already done some repairs to a Titian ramp and can't believe were they are cutting cost. I will try to post some pics of a ramp after loading twice when I get them of my camera.

Ya I've had the same thing happen. Twice I've had guys come in and ask us to rewire their decks with our light package b/c their lights don't work. I feel kinda bad for some guys that didn't know what kind of quality they were getting. You get what you pay for is the moral of this story I guess.

Cheers

Chelle ,

I had a Chance to look at these decks , as Stated in their ad these are Titan Generation 2 decks , they are a brand new model . To me they look a lot different to the marathon , the ramp is completely different , the sides are built differently , the legs are a 3 design , and the under structure is put together nothing like the marathon ( i have owned a marathon before ) . They look well put together ani I will be getting one on payday :D

are you sure your claims that these are a " knock off " are correct ?

My buddy had a titan. It looked decent but didnt hold up very well. Now he has another...

You should strongly consider keeping your money in your country. Why support the Chinese economy when you can support your local one instead?

How much more would it really cost you to get a marathon deck? Does the Chinese government fight for your rights as an outdoorsman?

Sounds like you have your mind made up anyways? Welcome to the forums. Hopefully you dont turn into another member that asks for advice and goes against it anyways...just to complain about the decision later.

We also had a look at the ‘new’ Chinese deck and although this deck looks different, our deck patent claims are still being infringed by this new model and our legal folks are now in the process of addressing this.
The deck we looked at was assembled and freestanding and wobbled like a newborn calf – the result of all the front and rear sway bracing being taken out.

This deck and lot of other truck decks like it rely on turnbuckles to both stiffen up the substructure and hold the deck and its load down into a truck box.
Marathon recommends all of our decks to be thru-bolt directly into the truck bed using the 4-½” steel bolts & beefy backup plates that are provided with every Marathon deck.
This ensures the deck and its load will be securely attached to the truck in the event of an accident (or any abrupt move you sometimes have to make in trying to avoid one!)
Nobody likes drilling holes in their truck and we don’t like doing it either…but expecting ¾ to 1-ton dynamic top-heavy load to be secured by turnbuckles attached to four unrated factory tie-down points spot-welded or screwed into the thin steel walls of a truck box- is rolling the dice and that isn’t something I want to think about while hitting a monster frost heave!
Don’t believe me? check out the reinforced steel around those big bolted seat belt restraint anchors that hold you and your seat to the deck - and then go check out those truck box tie-down points again….

I don’t think we are saying anything new here – but I guess you have to ask yourself why we build our product with sway bracing and why we don’t use turnbuckles?
It is definitely cheaper to build a deck without them – as would be dropping our $5m manufacturer liability insurance policy that backs up the product we build.
We don’t know the folks selling and servicing the deck you are looking at are doing these things but Marathon will continue putting our money where our mouth is by:
1. putting a lot more support into our decks in the interest of your safety
2. backing that up by constant improvement and innovation
3. servicing what we sell and standing behind it if things go sideways.

Consider some of these things and please feel free to drop by and see us or one of our dealers -

buy marathon its made right here at our back door. not something thats coming across the ocean besides if your tired of your taxes going up and all these stupid stimulus packages coming out to bail everyone out than dont but your sh$t from over seas spend your money where you make it HERE!!

Also Marathon come standard with Superglides on the ramps as well as Superclamp standard. When you compare apple to apple, I know which deck I would buy, Marathon...................

Full Lotus, another Canadian made deck that blows the Chinese titan knock offs out of the water also. Again standard with the options all you sled deck owner do appreciate. All of us Canadians/Americans really should support as much made in North American products we can. just my 2 cents

Aluminum Sled Decks..........

Looking to buy a retractable sled deck, just wondering what are the one's to stay away from........
I know Marathon Decks are supposed be #1, ..........but $ 4000.00 is pretty pricey.

Braaaaap !
