Tired of dealing with idiot buddy

Long story short. After getting his azz handed to him for the last few years my dummy buddy bought a TM8 (Maybe an 09 or 10) with a BD turbo setup. Typical BS of "its the best ever, fastest around, blah blah.. Its been out 4 times now, and more or less ruined 4 ride as we cater to this idiot as he blindly tunes it. Can someone give me some starting points on the RPM/Fuel numbers? We ride at 6k (ish) feet, its at what I can tell 8 PSI on straight 100LL fuel. It ran reasonable one ride, and now once you blurble its way through the bottom will light up and pull, then magically just sign off as if its on one cyld. AFRs spike as if its not getting fuel (this condition was new last ride) Im sure there are a million and seven things possible and Im somewhat savy with some of this crap so Im going to go over the mess this week, but looking for some obvious signs suggestions. Any thoughts are welcome. (Ive already suggested to burn it to the ground. Hes not sure thats a great plan yet)

Burning it to the ground might honestly be your best bet. BUT if he wont let that happen then we need more info to help you... What fuel controller? What fuel pressure? Very important if its an 09 or a 10 since its a different engine... Any other performance related mods? Porting or anything like that. Need all the specs to help you out.

If a guy dosent know how to run/setup/install his own turbo he should not be running one. I wouldn't be able to stand that. Clearly he should just work on his riding skills by the sounds of it.

Thank you. Well said!!!

Which kit, which controller, ebc?, fuel pressure...

Like Robert said, need more info in order to help. That sucks, been there back when 1000's were new, having a poor running one cost you time dealing with it.

In practice I agree with you. But in all honesty how many of you guys had your first turbo sled and knew everything about it? Knew every step to take to adjust, tune, maintain? How did you learn these things? (I learned the most by doing my own install, setup, tuning, when you buy a "turn key" turbo as your first turbo I say your asking for problems)

I am going to bet everyone of you including myself learned as much as you could from reading, studying and riding the darn thing.

I agree, I hate a guy that is constantly tuning and trying to get the sled to even run. If he hasn't done the due diligent's to learn everything he can prior to ruining your day, I say let him have it. But otherwise, find a new riding buddy, or like your doing now learn it yourself to help him out.

I feel your pain! One of my riding biddies has one of those pull and go bd turbos. He has been pulling wrenches for 2 years now still don't run right.

I hated my Boondocker Turbo- it was a pita to tune

also it never ran great 2 days in a row, I was running straight Avgas also. that may be the issue, maybe boonie's turbo's don't like avgas, I spent alot of time trying to get the boonie box setup right. and getting support from boondockers was like pulling teeth. after 1 season I sold it and bought a Twisted turbo with a Attitude box. very happy with the Twisted Kit. the problem with the boonie box is the parameters for adjusting are -99 to +99, the there's low , medium, high, then on top of that their are 5 or so different rpm settings. and boost fuel. so there are at least 16 different variables that have a value up or down 198 points. screw that. My attitude box has 7 variables, and I only touch 2 of those ever, and their adjust values are 0-7.5

at 8 lbs with 100ll you shouldn't be getting at DETonation, is he hitting the rev limiter causing it to blurble- your verbage- what weights is he running. is his AFR running high or low when the blurble happens? at what rpm is the blurble at? does it consistently hit the blurble at the same rpm? I can send you my Boonie numbers if you like but i was running a D&D901 big bore at 9 psi with a garrett 2860. also one of the issues I had was the EGT probes were mounted 1.5" too close to the cylinnders and I would get a real high reading saw 1350-1400 at times which .would scare me. which Boonie said was normal for that sled which I bought directly from Boondockers- Jared Sessions delivered it to me in person.

Sorry I had to rant, but need the above info to help u out.

I think arctic pretty much nailed it. This is my first year with a turbo or anything that needs more then a little fueling change that anyone can figure out. It was crazy at first house much I sucked at tuning, what got my to the point if not having te worst running sled in the world is reading online and asking for help when I didn't know what to do.

Also if your sled doesn't run you then you can sit an watch your buddies ride. I hate ruining my day but I hate ruining someone else's day more. Deal with what you have if you can't get it running well at that moment then ride what you have and have fun with it. Most of the time no matter how bad it is with a good attitude you can still have an awesome day. Believe me. The only thing ruining your day is the guy having a bad attitude. I've have amazing days where my sled ran like sh*t, you just need to ride it differently.

Sorry but I could rant on about this forever. It's not the sled ruining the day it's the attitude of the guy riding it.

Run straight race fuel while tuning. Then, once it's dialed, start experimenting with Av gas. Also, make sure the reeds are in good condition.

09-10 boondocker was nothing but a problem for 75% of people that owned them. There were several updates for electronics and mapping. I guarantee you the only way that sled is going to run right is to find someone that is running that kit, or pay someone like Vohk to get it running. It's too advanced for a non tuner

Everyone saying bd sucks is dumb! I have 3 bd turbos on a 09,10 m8 and a bd on 09 m1000 they all run great! The 800s rarely ever need tunning! I'd say your buddy BLINDLY tunning has got way out in left field and that's why it ran ok first day and worse since then!

As others have said get us more info! Bd numbers and clutching and year of machine! Is it rg or pg setup! We can help get it figured out! You Also need to make sure everything on the stock components of this sled is working fine!

Yes m1000mod 162 is DUMB for saying that

My personal Experience with my 09 Boondocker kit was Bad, the worst part was the crappy customer service after the sale that boonie gave me, it would take 2-4 days for them to get back to you if you have issues. then there was only one person in there who could talk intelligently about any issues. and or the people who did know there stuff were too important to be bothered offering Customer Support on the Phone. Boondocker won't see any of my Hard Earned $$ ever again. My brother has a 2013 TIAL Boondocker kit on his POOOlaris and it seems trouble free. but my other buddy who has a 2012 Poolaris non tial has had issues, I have another buddy with a 2012 non tial kit who had lots of issues until he upgraded to the new 3d mapping. So 4 guys with boonie kits only 1 with no issues, that's a 75-25% ratio. and they had issues getting support as Well.

I have almost 3k on a bd turbo and only minimal issues. When I opened the box brand new at 5pm on a Thursday a fin was broke on the compressor wheel. I called bd right at closing, they sent a person to ups at 530 to overnight me a center section so I could ride on Saturday. Earlier this year a friend had a loose screw go through his motor and take out his turbo, boondocker replaced it for free. Pretty decent service IMO. And they have always answered when I call

This cannot be stressed enough!!!!!!
are the internals in good shape and working properly.
Are the exhaust donuts and reeds in good shape. If there is any doubt replace them.
You will chase yourself in circles trying to tune if you have exhaust or intake leaks.

Well Carlc

maybe they have decided to do a better job, i dropped them like a bad habit in 2010, and never looked back

BD Turbo

I read every post on this topic. I saw nothing even close to anyone saying that boondocker sucks. Customer service definitely was a drag in 09/10.
A far cry from boondocker sucks.

How am I dumb for saying that! Maybe I shouldn't have used dumb as a word but it just seems to suit! All these kits have issues for some people and others they worked fine for! I know several people that have had issues with a cutler, Ovs, and twisted turbo! But did I bring it up to knock them??? No. I didn't because who knows what the real issue was? If a stock machine has a small issue it doesn't matter what turbo is on it, it's going to run like **** till that problem is addressed! But most would think it was turbo related issue and start pounding away on fuel box!

I also think a lot of people aren't good enough tuners to tune in a bd box where a do beck is pretty simple and basic! But bd box can be dialed and adjusted so much more you can achieve a much better running sled!
