Tire Experts

I need some help from the tire experts again, except this time it is for my truck.

I just bought 4-bfg 315-70-17 tires on chrome wheels for my 07 dodge ram 3500 single rear wheel 4x4.
The tire wear is as follows, 2-70%, 1-60%, 1-50%. I don't know why the 1 tire has more wear, and it seems to be worn at the outer edge of the tire. When I took my stockers off, I put this tire in the position which had the least wear tire (front drivers side). My buddy thinks this was a mistake, as the fronts should wear faster than the rears. Whats your opinion on this???

Second question. I just purchased 2 more tires that are new (same exact tire). What would be the best way to rotate these into the equation? These are rated for 50k miles, however on my 05 dodge I only saw 30k out of a set, I drive a mountain pass everyday so I'm not overly concerned with the lower mileage wear.

I'm going to put my stockers back on for the heavy snow months Dec-Feb as I do alot of travel with my big trailer and feel this setup is better for these condtions.

I forgot to mention, that I do tow alot, anywhere from 5k-10k#. This is the reason why I thought the rears wear faster.

i allways put the new on the front, since they wear faster:)less chance of blowouts and steering is better.an expert should tell you to put all 4 new on.a rear outside wear would be not enough air pressure.4/4s seem to allways cup the front tires.

I would max out the air pressure.

Did you have the suspension aligned using the alignment process where all 4 wheels are laser aligned? A good shop will give you a print out of the balance job to see the way the suspension was set up.

DDon't know if you can look at a tire balancer ...

There are different types besides the metal ones they put on a rim ... which are ineffective when the tire picks up rocks / mud etc.

There are powders and rubber BB's to put inside the tire. There is also a metal "spacer" where it is filled with a liquid to rotate and balance out the tire.

I would start with the new tires up front as well. To get maximum wear out of these tires make sure you always keep 50 psi in them all the time, check often. Always periodically check the fronts. When you see outside feathering rotate them front to back. If you do this religiously they will wear a long time. I got 90 some thousand km on my first set and already up to 50,000 km on my second set and they still have over 50% left on them. Not too bad for a 315 BFG. Remember these tires are a little to wide for the Dodge rim which is why you see the feathering. Good Luck !

The tires came on chrome hummer wheels, which are either 8" or 8.5" wide. The truck was just aligned at Dodge.
These tires have been on the truck for 2 weeks, so this existing treadwear is from another vehicle (a stock hummer).
The 4 tires have plenty of life left in them, and I bought the 2 other new tires only because I saw them on craigslist, made an offer, and the guy bit so why not have them.

I just thought that rotating all 6 would net me the longest tire life. Maybe new up front, a good rotation, and when the lower treads wear down replace with the other 2????

On diesels I have found the rears wear out faster than the fronts assuming everything is aligned and balanced properly. This is due to the massive torque and extra loads from towing alot. Pouring the coal to her to smoke the rice burners probably doesn't help either. The right rear will wear out faster than the left because you turn sharper more times than when turning left. This causes addition friction on that tire. The BFG's are great tires. Just don't overload them or you will blow out the sidewalls in no time.

what load rating are they?? i would doubt that a hummer comes with anything more than a 6 ply or 8 ply which i wouldn't put on a one ton. also, someone said to "make sure all four of your wheels are lazer aligned". you can't align the rear wheels on your one ton solid axle pick up. i wouldn't both rotating all six tires through. i'd take the four used ones and sell those for money for two more new ones. then you have four new ones :) make sure to rotate at every oil change and you're golden!:beer;

The bfg are load range D 6 ply and have a load rating of 3140 each. They are sufficient for the truck and light loads around my area. When I take a road trip with the trailer, I'll throw the stock load range E back on.

I'm not seeing any wear out of these tires (even the one that is feathered). I have the 2 new ones, and found another brand new one. In fact I feel like a tire distributer now, as I have the 5 stockers, and 7 aftermarkets (5 mounted-2 loose).
I'm just going to wear this set down, and if I can't find the last new bfg I'll buy from whoever mounts the other 3 for me. I'll use the best 1 for my spare.
