read something on here about the 163 having tip ups, and the 155 straight?
got me wondering.
looking at the pics of '14s, i dont see them tip up at all on the 163..

oh, another topic, but why does the 600 144 weigh 15lbs more than the 155? is the series 5.1 that much lighter?

I think it has something to do with the 144 tunnel/running boards being different. Also the torsion spring suspension is heavier. The SBA suffers fromt the same problem...it weighs 460 lbs. and the RMK Assault is 435. Makes it hard to pick a shorter track sled that is heavier.

ah, i see that now. looks like the 144 maybe has the tip up rails? it has an extra idler where the tip up would start anyways. that just dont make sense to tip up a shorter rail, but i guess theyre just use up older parts on the 144.
i wish they would make a 144 pro 600, that would be a hoot. every year i think about taking the plunge but i dont need the 800, i want a lighter weight 6 with a tall paddle 144 and straight rails.

don't know if these would help but apparently some doos need em..
In our ongoing process to improve the overall benefits of the snowmobiling experience we are offering a new product to help the issue with 2010-13 Rail Tip Angles, introducing our NEW Powder Wedge. It is a simple bolt on device that will change the rail profile on 2010-13 Summits. http://www.shoptomssnowmobile.com/Powder-Wedge-detail.htm?productId=-410625&catalogId=-844&fpg=1
Their talking about the rails tippin up at the back of the sled. It's said to make it trail more like a short track, but some say it causes the sled to wheelie more. Polaris has switched back and forth a few times.

I think he's referring to the rear being tipped, but what do these do for the Doo?

As far as why is the 144 tipped, basically it's aimed at being a crossover sled so it theoretically handles more like a 136 on hardpack. The 155" they don't care about trail handling so flat rails.

It is the rear of the rail that is tipped up. The idea was with less pressure at the rear,it would turn better.
The down side is it lifts the skis easier
Not that big of a issue on a NA sled but on a boosted sled its not so good.
2011 163 Pro RMK was the last sled to use them.
Changed my boosted 2011 Pro from tipped to straight and did notice a difference .

Personally, I prefer the tipped up rails. I have a '12 Pro 163 with the straight rails and if anyone with an '11 with tipped up rails wants to trade, PM me.

What your seeing on a doo, is likely just a anti-stab improvement, but not sure. I have been wrong once before...

On the pro, only the 2011 163" model had tipped up rails.

I don't think it makes any difference unless you ride a lot of super hard hardpack.

i seen those plastic doohickies for the doos, they are meant to make the approach angle shallower up front, but past the tip of them it gets steeper:face-icon-small-con
thanks for the clarification on the rear tip ups. i never noticed they did away with them after '11. i had an '02 with them, and did notice the wheelieing, but also thought that was characteristic of the non-coupled skid.
and im gonna say polaris is just using up old parts on the 144. i dont think it is so it handles like a 136. its called rocky mnt king. they make other crossover sleds...
the 144 that weighs more than all the others and has tipped up rails is a silly model imo, but the rental fleets and newbies buy them up im sure.

That's why I want 163 tipped-up rails for my '12. A lot of the areas we ride have 20-25 km of packed/groomed trail to get to the riding areas and I find my sled pushes too much in the corners vs my old IQ chassis with tipped up rails.

I don't know when, but I do remember when they first came out, Polaris claimed the long track with the tipped rail turned (radius) equally to to the short track on hard pack. (Parking lot) :face-icon-small-dis

That's my point. The 144 suspension is the same as the one used on the Switchback Assault which is a crossover. They just don't want to mess around with 2 144" suspensions I guess. They are also still torsion spring for whatever reason.
