Time to fight in B.C........again

I found this on Biglines.com:

The Province of BC is intending to adopt a Plan that will prohibit motorized use of the backcountry where historically this use has been enjoyed by many.

The LRMP (Land Resource Management Plan) process was initiated by the Province in 2002 to “ensure sustainability of the natural environment and the economy” in BC. This process looked at the backcountry, and proposed restrictions to usage that were considered appropriate. The final Plan that is now proposed for adoption for the Sea-to-Sky region severely prohibits motorized use in many areas, well beyond the 25% non-motorized areas that are already in place. It closes down many areas and corridors that have been historically enjoyed by motorized vehicle enthusiasts. In most every case, the prohibitions result not from real environmental concerns, but are there to benefit a few back-country skiers who come up from Vancouver once a winter to go ski around a cabin. Why should you, a local resident, be told that you can’t ride into an area any more because some selfish skier who is only up for the weekend doesn’t want to hear your snowmobile? The Plan however says it’ is okay for the skiers to ride up to their cabin in a helicopter!

Over the last 5-years, many people have worked tirelessly through the LRMP and Winter Backcountry Forum processes to try to keep unreasonable restrictions to motorized use of the backcountry from being implemented. It appears that all the input in this regard has been ignored by the LRMP. The current plan in fact has significantly further restricted motorized areas when compared to the previous plans presented during the public consultation process in 2002/2003.

Some of the areas that have been enjoyed by snowmobilers in the past and are now proposed for closure/restrictions are:

* Face Mountain

* Peterson Valley / Rhododendron

* Upper Lillooet River

* Pebble Glacier and North Creek

* Noel Creek and Hope Creek

* Upper Soo Valley

* Callaghan Valley, Rainbow

* Phelix Creek

* Elaho, Glendenning and Simms

* Meager Valley

The complete LRMP Plan can be viewed online at

http://ilmbwww.gov.bc.ca/lup/lrmp/coast/s2s/lrmpdocuments.htm

Map 6 at this website shows the areas with restrictions to motorized winter usage. The map is difficult to interpret, but, basically, anything that is not the yellow RA3 color has restrictions on motorized use. Plotted maps will be available for viewing at Valley Chainsaw and Vision Motorsports in Pemberton.

Without your support, this Plan will soon be implemented. If you want to continue to enjoy recreating in the backcountry, please let the Province know by sending a letter (by registered mail has the most effect – it forces them to respond) plus an e-mail to each of the following – LRMP, Minister of Agriculture and Lands, and Minister of Tourism. Sample letters are appended for your use if you are not able to prepare your own letters.

Thank you for your support. Please get all your friends who support keeping the backcountry open to EVERYONE to also send letters expressing their opinions to the Ministers and the LRMP. Watch for further information on how you can help at Vision Motorsports, Valley Chainsaw and on local bulletin boards.

I havent had a chance to go over the plan yet but it is time for everyone to buck up and fight...........consider this your notice to get informed and do battle!!!!!

No everybody figures somebody else will do it. Then when nobody does everybody *****3s about it and says "when did they say they were gonna do this". Then they go and ride there anyway, then the greenies use that as ammo to close more areas. And the cycle repeats. Thats the way it goes.

I have posted the three addresses and contact names on the old Forums in mulitple locations. I also handed out letters locally here in BC and had people sign them at the Puyallup Snowmobile show. I had a response to my letter but it does not look good. There a few cross country skiers (with money) that are demanding that sledders be banned from the areas listed.

Here are the names and address of the people that need to be contacted with your letters. It is all about numbers so let's make it happen!

This doesn't look very good at all. See attachments for screen captures of the map at the link below.

Here is the winter recreation map that shows what will be open and what will be closed to snowmobile use:

I would be willing to help down here in the states (Washington) south of the border if I can if someone more familiar with this proposal would email me (send PM for email address) very detailed and specifc information that snowmobilers from the states could include in their comment letters. I am not familiar with how the Canadian government operates for these LRMPs. And I can't expect all of the snowmobilers down here to read all of the documents on the LRMP webpage. I need to make this as quick and easy as possible. I know the state side method of madness for these plans only too well. Also include the comment deadline and I can then format the info and hopefully put it into a SAWS Alert. I could not find a deadline on the LRMP website.

Sea-to-Sky Land and Resource Management Plan
Current Status
Updated July 26, 2007

The Sea-to-Sky LRMP Consultation Draft has been available for public review since February 2005. The current draft is dated April 14, 2006 and presents a more concise plan document than the earlier draft.

The draft Sea-to-Sky LRMP was developed by a public planning forum consisting of representatives from various sectors. This planning forum presented a package of recommendations for the LRMP to the provincial government in October 2004. The recommendations package, Cabinet's response to those recommendations and a review by provincial government agencies were used as the basis for developing the draft plan. Until the final LRMP is completed the current draft will be used as interim management direction for provincial government decision making within the plan area.

Under the direction of Cabinet, in early 2005, the province invited First Nations with traditional territory in the plan area to engage in government to government discussions (G2G) on the LRMP. The draft LRMP was tabled with First Nations as the basis for consultation. Currently, G2G discussions with several First Nations have been completed and agreements on land use planning achieved. Pending completion of G2G with the remaining First Nations a final plan document that incorporates the First Nation agreements will be drafted and submitted to government for approval. The April 14, 2006 Sea-to-Sky LRMP Consultation Draft will be shared with the public at open houses in Fall of 2007. A second set of open houses will be scheduled in 2008 to present the final government approved plan.

got a pm on this issue, here it is with my response

QUOTE=x-guy]Hey man, I was just reading your post about closing down large swatches of the ice caps, I have not heard anything about this, I don't know if I dug up an old thread, but before I started firing off letters and emails I wanted to be sure its current still, let me know if you don't mind, this is sad

also where do you ride? I am from Maple Ridge myself, ride mostly the coq/10k, ice caps, brohm, but have heard some good things about the backside of Mt Chem in Chilliwack, if you have any info I would appreciate it.[/QUOTE]

I am from Golden, nowhere near there, I just posted it when I found as I do with all land use issues. The response I got was weak to say the least.

http://ilmbwww.gov.bc.ca/lup/lrmp/coast/s2s/lrmpdocuments.htm

all the info you need should be at the above link, go fight the good fight, I give up when a post of this nature garners 8 replies. Only one member local to the area replied, it seems to me the sledding public in general does care.
I will continue to fight local closures as I have for years even though most issues here are now caused by riders who cannot respect the boundaries the local club has negotiated and ride in the cat, heli ski and click click areas.
In 10-15 years hopefully there are still places up north and west that allow riding so I can retire up there.

Peace and good luck.

I say we just quietly burn their VW vans to the ground .....uh oh !!!! My bad was I politicaly uncorrect ....oh right I don't give a **** !!!!
