Timbersled chain case sprockets

My Timber sled came to me used and while changing out the drive bearings I noticed the 20 t sprocket was on top and the 17 t was on the bottom.

Track speed has always seemed to slow and it looks like (from their web site) the 17 t should be the top sprocket. Can someone confirm this?

stock gearing was 17 on top and 20 on the bottom. If you put your 20 on the bottom though it's going to gear it down. Your making it sound like you would like to see higher gearing which would require you to run a larger counter shaft sprocket.

16 tooth avaibable

Last year I geared mine up for a short time, until the show got deeper.
If you want to raise the countershaft sprocket to a 14 you will need a 16 driven sprocket to keep the chain tight. Last season the 16 were avaibable in aluminum. Do not know about the steel sprockets this season.

I guess I said it wrong, I'm not looking for a higher top speed, rather to make the track spin faster for a given rpm.

Yes I am aware of the steel sprockets and want to change these aluminum ones out.

Gearing

It sounds like you have the taller gear setup allready with the 20 tooth on top and that is how I just put mine and have put one ride on it so far with the taller gears. I can tell a big gain in top speed probably about 15mph faster at top speed have not been able to get a good gps speed yet but before the switch I had a gps speed of 57mph pinned. I have a KTM 530 excr what bike are you runing it on? I am going to give it another ride to see if I am going to keep it this way.

I was running a 13 tooth on my 525 last season and the stock MH gearing and it seem to work really good. I would give that a try and see how you like it.

plus 1 on stock gearing

I can run 60 mph wound out tight on my 530 EXC with stock MH gearing.
From a stop use 2nd gear if not 3rd and when the terrian gets slow and tough 1st is the gear of choice.
I tried to gear up last season which worked well until the snow depth increased and I needed more rpm to keep the track spinning.

Retired motoman I have tried the same setups you have described and came to basically the same conclusion however I have talked with some others who say I should try this setup 14 counter sprocket 16 Jack shaft with stock gear box setup of 17 on top and 20 on bottom. I just ordered the 16 today and will post my results soon. This should be in the middle of the first 2 setups and I think will work perfect we will see.

If any of you guys are interested changing your gearing and want to know how a certain sprocket combination will effect your drive ratio let me know. I have created a spreadsheet with every possible sprocket combination and the resulting drive ratio. Some sprocket combinations are not possible on some bikes for example on my KTM 300 it is not possible to run a 13 counter shaft to a 17 drive sprocket so I am currently running a 14 - 20. Anyway if you want me to send you that spreadsheet just send me a pm with your email address.

Ordered my 16 tooth Jack shaft sprocket yesterday from Timbersled and received it in the mail today WOW!!!:face-icon-small-hap
