throttle saftey switch??

can someone explain how this works? i have a 97 700 and when i push the flapper down(not in) it stalls. i tried setting the cable play.still not working right. i took out the little button to see if it woule help. but i dont understand how this works. is it just the small button or is it hooked to the flapper?

Pull the handlebar cover off and unplug the connector for the brown wires on that side and see if that fixes it.

There are 2 momentary off switches, in the throttle block that the flapper pushes on when activated. I think one has to be open all the time to keep from grounding the motor out. If the sled is running, you should be able to push the front and the back of the flapper to the throttle block and kill the motor, but by having the rocking motion, it opens one simultaneously closing the other.

On an XLT I had, the plungers had actually worn through the contacts within the switches themselves and it would cut out at certain throttle positions. I unplugged it to make sure that is what it was, then replaced them.

The little button works with the throttle lever. The lever, where it connects to the handle bars has two positions. Where it pivots it can move back and forth. It is so if the throttle was wide open but the little button under the lever is depressed it will kill the motor. Just do what volcano said... Unplug it. You wont have a safety but oh well. Or you can get a new on but I think you have to buy a new throttle assembly.

There are two small pins as mentioned. One pin must always be pushed in for the engine to run. This design is to kill the engne in the event your slides freeze open and you let off the throttle. The pins come as part of the emergency kill switch assembly. The pins can be accessed by removing the 4 screws on the end cap (piece toward the center of handle). Inside of the throttle block are 2 additional screws that hold the pins in their respective wells. You can remove them and check their functioning. It is very important to have the proper throttle cable adjustment so that regardless of the throttle position one of the pins is pushed in. Having too much slack in your cable can cause the engine to kill as you change your grip on the throttle and suddenly fire right back up, which if you're sidehilling tends to pitch yoiu right off and down the mountain the machine goes.
If you don't care to have this feature they can be permantly disable by snipping their wires.
