have a 2009 polaris 800 dragon that keeps burning down first thought it was to lean so put a fuel control box on it and it went down again yesterday with 20 miles on brand new rebuild wasnt lean it was really rich when it happened and rode it all the way out and it would run find every once in a while but it was still burnt down cause of all the alluminiun on the plugs
just really frustrated on what it could be still under warranty so no worrys there

thanks
matt

I assume since this is 3rd time... you've already checked oil pump, cables, ect... I'd start there and make sure you're warming that thing up to around 120F before jumping on it. Good luck:face-icon-small-dis

al of the oil stuff was fine plus mixing oil in gas tank
it was half way through the day so it was plenty warm just breakiung trail and then stopped and it died and wouldnt start so we pulled the plugs and they both had alumunium on them so we put put new ones in and got it running rough and took it home

just because it was half way through the day does not mean the problem didnt start from you not warming it up properly...always let it warm up to 120 before you ride it

so this is the 3rd time and all that has been done is put new top ends on it and a control box? obviously there is a problem with it being lean. the dealer should be smart enough to know there is a problem and that putting a top end on it will not fix it.

its not lean the 02 guage reading were around thirteen so it was not lean at all
and it was warmed up properly it idled for at least 20 minute before being moved

You should take a look at redneckracing.com i heard they have the fix for the 800s burning down.

Try checking the injectors could be bad and staying open which might wash down the cylinder. Check for dirt and water in gas tank I dumped my tank last night and the last gallon looked like swamp water.Good luck at finding a dealer who really cares there are very few.

This could prove to be a very troublesome sled for you. Take it back to your dealer or find a better one. Have them go over it with a fine toothed comb. That means replacing the ECU and the voltage regulator. Did you happen to notice what the engine temp was when she went?

Then talk with them about fixing it right. That means possibly going with Wiseco pistons to get the tolerances right. Most of the mechanics are aware that the stock OEM pistons do not make the proper tolerances. They are told to assemble it that way anyway.

Take all precautions. There are things that can be done with the head. I would cap the exhaust valves as a precaution too. Polaris isn't going to like it, but the Polaris warranty doesn't fix the problem. It just puts the motor back together. It will likely happen again.

What map were you using on the Power Commander? I'm going to be very curious what you find out with this. Oh, you may want to check the throttle body boots as well. Mine had delaminated. That could cause bad things to happen very quickly.

we thing now that its the injectors or the ecu
the temp was around 126 when i last looked at it right before it went down
i just have the boondocker fuel control box on it with the 02 guage but it has to be the way its burning the fuel to cuse this or what else could

as far as the afr reading. if your reading 13's at wot i wouldnt be suprised if it burned down.. thats a little high, even on NA sled. you should be at lower 12's wot if you wanna be safe, maybe low 13's under very light cruising.

you say breakin trail, if your pushin the thing hard making long WOT runs at 13 afrs that pretty much askin to nuke it. might not be your problem at all, but its definately closer to the edge then I would run it.,

those afr reading are reading just fine when we put the boxes the guy who we got them from is is a local boondocker dealer and he told us where to have every thing set as far to the load that the engine is pulling when going wether breaking trail or going down the groomed trail and he was present when it burned down and he said it wasnt lean cause the sled was smoking really bad as if it were just stareted on a cold morning

thats kinda what i thought could the ecu be going bad
its almost like the injectors are stuck open and it loading the sled up with fuel flooding it out but still doesnt explain the alluminium oin the plugs

What are you running for fuel? Good non-oxygenated 91 or better tested pump? stock pipe? stock head? whats your elevation?

aluminium on plugs is caused by only 1 thing, detonation heat photos of piston that stuck?

has a slp single pipe
the dealer tore into it today so we'll see tommoro what happened hope fully
could it be possible that the cylinder tolerances are off like the crank cases on the older 800 and causeing it to stick
just thinking of possibilities

Until you get it running right, get rid of the SLP pipe. Eliminate as many variables as possible. If/When you get it running you can go back to the pipe.

Check the cylinders, MAKE SURE THEY ARE ROUND. I heard of a guy having burndown problems only to find out the cylinders were mis-shaped.
