Thoughts on loud exuast !?

I have a KTM 690 with the stock exhaust, last year I noticed when others were riding it how quiet it was and it was hard to work out where it was and if they had crashed/got stuck or were still cruising around. Some of the louder bikes and sleds were easy to locate because how much noise they made.

This brings me to my next question, anyone have a good, loud, cheap, powerful/makes good back pressure exhaust to buy or build ?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Pray for snow!

I hate super loud exhausts. I'm so glad my new Pro Circuit T5 is loads quieter than my KX450F with the FMF w/ Powerbomb. You could hear that thing for MILES. Spend the exhaust money on a Garmin Rhino and GPS your friends instead.

:O
Loud exhausts close riding areas.

Buy radios. Cheaper than exhausts and still work for communication when motors aren't running.

I tend to agree with this, although I think you can get away with a little more noise in the winter than in the summer on a dirt bike. When I bought my used WR450 last year, it already had an FMF exhaust on it but the guy also gave me the stock exhaust. It was way too loud for me, so the stocker went back on. I switched to a slightly less restrictive tip that I use only in the winter and I switch back to completely stock in the summer. To me, being fast and having fun are NOT totally dependent on horsepower... skill and ability are bigger factors. I don't think the extra noise is worth the small power gain. And I just can't see it (the extra noise) being a safety enhancement.

So PM me if you're interested in a like-new FMF Factory 4.1 muffler for an 03-05 WR/YZ 450. :face-icon-small-win

The bikes echo insanely bad even in the snow, i can hear them way farther away then any straight piped turbo sled i have ever built.

Something about the tone of the pipe.

and honestly, with how much your WOT, even a lot of stock MX pipes leave my head ringing pretty fast.

Have to agree.
I have a Two Brothers slip on on my 2010 KTM SX 450, it is what came on the bike when I bought it and cannot stand how loud it is, even after a repack it is still just as loud. Would definitely consider something quieter..

Started riding with ear plugs last season and now can't ride without them.
I like to wear them every day. makes people a lot easier to deal with.... LOL

If i could only get some to stay in my ears when I take my helmet on and off. I know its not good for my hearing, and I don't like the droning exhaust blowing out my ears any more then the next guy.

Ive hated load exhaust since my 05 kxf 250f. Loudest bike I ever had and then I bought my pumpkin. I loved how quite it was and cant go back now. I have started wearing my earplugs when I ride a listen to music. I love music and riding so much fun. Next spring we are going to get some radios so we can talk and I can listen to music as well. Thinking im going to have to wire them up myself as I am not sure they exist.

you should look into the scala rider com systems. i use them on road bikes and bluetooth my tunes. was thinking about puting them on sno lids too but friends are cheap arses!

I've had turboed Apexs and Nytros that were loud but not as loud as that kx450 with fmf and power bomb!! Sounded like a helicopter!! Maybe I'm just getting old, but quieter is better.

My friend had a loud exhaust kit(not by choice, it was broken) and he had to wear ear plugs all season just to keep from going deaf. As for his riding buddies, me included, it was a bit much riding behind him and pulling up next to him and attempting communication. Yes, we could hear him a half mile away, but it was for sure not something he would have paid money for. Thankfully he has a quieter bike this year. I agree with the others...quiet is better

After a few years the loud exhaust sooner or later gets on every ones nerves including most of the owners . I won't ride without ear plugs and we also have the SMH10 Sena Bluetooth and I have the volume all the way up and at times have a hard time hearing what is being said and than if I go to climb on another machine I have to turn the volume down because it's to loud .

Ever follow someone threw the trees covered in fresh snow with a loud exhaust and as their going threw the snow starts falling like some one is actually kicking the trees .

I've wondered how much of a factor it has to do with slides or avalanches ? There's a riding area up here that I won't ride anymore and stay away from other places like it . The one skis aren't prone to either having to go up or down but can go anywhere they please , and cutting across a bowl several times without leaving the bowl will sooner or later have a bad outcome .

A stock mx 450 off the show room makes about 120db which is about 5-6 times louder than 94-96db which is allowed at most riding areas, no wonder we lose areas and it does not matter if ur on snow, sound carries further than u think, keep ur bike quiet and wear ear protection so u can hear when ur older and help keep riding open for the younger generation!

Yeah good points all.
I was just curious because of how loud sleds are.
I'll keep it down I promise !
In Australia loud bikes became a big issue and we as a group kept it down and spread the word.

I've got to say, I'm so glad to see the overwhelmingly positive response in this thread for keeping bikes quieter year-round. Unfortunately, based on what I see (and hear) on the trails, it seems like a lot of folks don't feel this way. But it's encouraging that the majority of the Snowest forum community seems to be a more responsible group. I hope we can show the leadership needed to keep the noise down and hopefully keep our favorite areas open. :face-icon-small-hap

i was looking at making a little "dongle" that slid into my fmf slip on outlet to kick it down at the snow, I bet this would greatly reduce the amount the sound carries out across the mountains. no restriction increase, just directing it in a better direction to be absorbed by the snow.
