Thoughts on fuel for the Pro

I can longer find non-ethanol fuel in my area. (I have connections to buy it by the barrel). I do NOT want to run ethanol in my sled (11 Pro all stock except HPS can), in fact I don't even know what happened to my ethanol resistor plug. What is everyone running for fuel? I have thought about running AV Gas but have heard some bad things about it, like it runs hotter. Race fuel is just too dang expensive. I am not sold on snake oil additives. If there is ethanol in your fuel, it doesn't matter what you put in it to combat the effects, there is still ethanol in your fuel.

Just not sure what fuel to use. Thanks in advance for any thoughts.

Gas

I had an 11 ran and ran the Non eth plug most all the time. I how ever made it a point to always buy gas from a station that was getting fresh gas 2-3 times a week. Had no ill effects in 1400ish mi. The only time I would run the eth plug was if I didn't trust the gas, like on a trip some where.

I also know that basic math says if you were to run a 50/50 mix, of say 87oct 10%eth gas, mixed with 104 non eth race. you would be in the 94-95 oct range with a 5%eth. would think that this mix would be way over kill to run you sled with the non eth plug. Even mixing 91 non eth 50/50 with 91 10% eth would more than be good if it is fresh gas.

The biggest problem with eth gas, is that the shelf life is only like 11days before it starts to head south. Now if your constantly putting fresh tanks of gas in more frequently than that, it should be more than fine. I alway put my sled away empty as I can get it, and run some stabil through it right before i park it. I do the same with my Boats 60hp outboard, and have never had a problem.

My father is a Still/small engine mech, and is a crazy when it comes to gas in stuff. one of the biggest things they teach at the Still workshops is how to manage the fuel problems. It is the number 1 thing he fixes on the weekend worrior's saws and weed whips. The guy comes in with the story, it ran great last fall, now it wont start. Empty the gas, install a new carb, put in new gas, right back to 1 pull technology. Good fuel is your friend, eth is not a problem, if you know what ya got to start with.:face-icon-small-dis

Why dont you just buy it by the barrel then?

Can you get a 300 gallon tank at your house and run it in your sled and personal vehicles?

you coul always run AVGAS Or MOGAS ( 87 non ethanlol) from a local airport either is way cheaper than race and excellent quality

good thread. wondering the same. Dad doesn't believe me that 300 gallons of an ethanol blend that we get once a year to run the mower, ranger and my sleds will turn to crap and make stuff run poorly. I dump Seafoam in everything to help, but I haven't put gas in the sleds at our farm in a couple years now. Old tank with aging ethanol fuel in it. Fresh, high quality gas is cheap insurance, no matter the price of gas.

Sno,
In the same boat. Have never run Ethanol gas in any of our sleds . . . but now it's a reality. Sigh.

My plan is to bring the sleds home from a ride as empty as possible, drain what I haven't burned and then add fresh fuel the next ride complete with the best ethanol treatment (still searching) I can find.

I will burn the removed fuel in the car/boom truck/ranch truck etc to get it used up prior to it becoming even more crap then it was when it was made.

Still looking for a source of real fuel Mark, if I can find one, I'll let you know.

Bag

You guys may want to look into contacting a local small scale fuel hauling company.

May find a company who's willing to provide/rent you a 300 or 500 gallon tank and deliver ethanol free to it

race fuel all the way in every thing i own.. lawn mower, generator, snowblower, weed eater, sons kitty kat, moms new 2013 rmk pro, and my 2012 rmk pro turbo..
105 octane.. there is a reason its price cause it always works. snow blower was my grampas and he bought it new in 1976 and it still starts 2 pulls.
cheap insurance cause motors are exspensive
just my 2 cents

How bad can ethanol affect your sled with the ethanol plug in? I ran ethanol fuel in from february to the end of the year never had any problems. Hard to find non eth around here now. Going to add the additives that supposedly get rid of the ethanol but still run the plug see how that goes.

It's not so much the running that is the problem, it's the not running. If it sits, the ethanol attracts water, then precipitates out of the fuel leaving a gummy watery alcohol mix at the bottom of your tank to be the first thing sucked up by your fuel pump. Also the ethanol eats rubber and plastic, adding more gummy crap to your fuel while deteriorating your fuel system. The ethanol additives fight the negative effects of the eth fuel, but do not remove it. You could remove the eth by pouring water into the fuel, agitate it, let it settle, then pump the pure gas off the top and add lots of octane, but I don't recommend it.

Why don't u just add a little menthol hydrate after every ride thats what I do I've never had an issue. Bin doing that to my 2001 edge x since new and I've never had to rebuild it one pull and it starts

We run our Pro's with 91 ethanol fuel and the non-ethanol plug. This seems to be fine at our elevation (9k-12k). I don't think I'd do it below that. I soon as I added the PAR head I had to add race fuel or put the plug back to ethanol (negating the head performance). I'm hoping to run non-ethanol fuel that I'd have to buy in the barrel. Ethanol fuel is just bad, too much water attraction.
