Those that ride in wolf territory

I don't live in an area where I have to worry about wolves, but I do take trips into territory where wolves are a problem.
Last year impaticular, I happened upon a wolf den where there was a fresh moose kill, and even though I didn't see the wolf, I knew it's presence, and I knew it was watching me.

I was nervous about the area, but wasn't in a situation where I was stuck and digging out by myself so obviously I left and rode the rest of the day without thinking about it.

Whats a sufficient sidearm for wolf territory. I have a 9mm with which I'm comfortable with, however I feel this is a little too light for a wolf situation.

School me!!!! Is the 9 enough, .40, .45?????

Live in Alaska, come across a wolf kill a time or two in my day while sledding.....I carry a 45 while on the sled.

9mm would be more than sufficient. .22WMR so you won't damage the pelt. ;)

I pack a .40......I really don't carry it because of defense, just fun to have along sometimes! But the hot loads I reload would but a whoopin' on a wolf if I had to...

Thanks for the reply's.
I think I'm just phycing myself out, but it never hurts to be prepared.

Where do you guys carry your gun? If a wolf attacks, would I have enough time to get it out of your pack? I'm thinking if a lion attacks, if its not on you its too late because they are going to stalk you and catch you by surprise. Don't know much about wolf stalking/killing habits.

If an animal attacked you while a weapon was packed away you wouldn't even have time to say "Oh Chit" let alone get your backpack off to get your weapon out. LOL

You'd have to have it ready to go. Say you were stuck alone in a meadow, I'd have my seat trunk unzipped and it laying in there ready to draw.
Once your dug out and ready to ride, secure it in your backpack.

If your stuck in a meadow don't you guys think that the snow is going to be alittle too deep for a 150 pound wolf to get to you very fast?

How are you guys worried about getting attacked by a wolf while sleding? I have seen 3 of them while sleding and it has never crossed my mind that a wolf would attack me while I was riding or stuck? I pack a 22 and it'll get the job done when I about run them into the ground chasing them :D

Well if a wolf is going to attack you, it is more likely than not, that you won't have time to pull a gun !

I carry a knife for close quarters combat :beer;

To answer you question..like Scott said..all 3 would work !

A shotty with double buck would get the point across also ;)

I've taught guys that carry 9s and they were suppose to be carrying .40s. The truth is if you can hit with a 9 and not a .40 carry the 9.

P.S. strong side carry! You always know where it is at ALL times.

my .2

Carrying a gun on a sled to protect yourselves from wolves??? Is this thread even real?

I would really love to know if anybody has ever gotten attacked by a wolf while sledding. I sled in wolf country every day I go, and it never crossed my mind that I need to carry a gun.

If you are that worried about it, maybe you should think about the grizzly bear that is denned up under that snow you're riding as well!!!! What are you going to do when you trench up his backside? You better carry a tank on the back of your sled to protect you from that.

A lot of people actually spend all day in the mountains with kids sledding, skiing etc. Probably smart to carry a gun cause where there is one wolf there are usually 3+, and they can cross snow really well.

Thanks for explaining it to the tough crowd.
Actually, I'm not worried about the wolf, I've been riding in their area for years. For some reason It's just something that I've thought about.

I've thought about having a gun just to have if I got stranded overnight to keep various critters at bay when the campfire dies out at 2:30 in the AM. But I agree if it isn't right handy on you if you get attacked it might as well be back in the truck. I would think a mountain lion would be what somebody should be worried about more as it seems you hear more about lions attacking people than wolves (maybe it's plot by the envormentalist-loving media to make us think wolves are more docile than they realy are...?:D )

Whatever you decide to carry, better make sure to keep it well oiled. Frozen water that melts and blued steel don't mix!

The chances of an adult getting attacked by wolves while sledding is remote, we have came closer to pissing off a moose and calf when we stopped in between them in the trees. The problem is, add in food, kids, and sleds, in one area for a long period. I think that increases the odds greatly. we have passed close to wolf packs while sledding and they really aren't afraid to get up close. I'm just way more watchful when kids are around because they are too young to know when they are in trouble from moose, bear, cougar, wolf, etc. I guarantee if an animal does grab or trample a kid in the snow and no one has a gun, good luck getting there fast enough. A gunshot is just as good to startle an animal as killing one. Hopefully I will never need it, but not a chance I will take.
