Those that have imported sled from the US...

I am in the process of getting mine registered and just have to get it to Crappy Tire to be inspected then I am good. Now I have a few questions about what they looked at for this safety.

On the sheet from RIV it says "Attach miles odometer label if required".
What if it doesnt have a odometer or speedo anymore?? Problem??

"Headlamps on requirements"
Non factory headlamp but lights that come on when running. Problem?

Reflectors and or lights"
Doesnt have a tail light?? should I Jim one on there for the inspection or are they only concerned about the headlights??

The machine is a 2002 RMK 800 which has a lexan hood and headlight delete but has small foglights that come on with motor.

sorry for the rant but I am running out of time to get this done before snow is here.

Cheers

Chris

import

I imported a 2005 Rev. Not sure on the speedometer, headlight is a functioning headlight...doesn't have to be factory.

You must have a tail/brake light to pass...I had to borrow one and wire it for the inspection...then gave it back.

Funny how Canadian Tire does the inspections for sleds, should be a sled shop that understands the industry....:beer;

Thanks Cap, yeah i figured as much with the tail light. I am gonna grab a tractor trailer tail light from work and jimmy that on there for the inspection.

Well I guess I will see what happens with the lack of a speedo.

howdy! I took mine in and they only looked at the numbers on the tunnel.I asked if he wanted to have it run or see the lights work and he said that he just wanted the money!kinda ticked me off,just another money grab for nothing

I just imported 3 sleds last weekend and took them to crappy tire, the guy didn't even go out and look at them. Just filled out and stamped the forms. On previous sleds, I have had them come and check for reflectors, head/tail light and make me start the sled to make sure kill switch worked.

RIV told me to go to Crappy, it's not like they are going to work on it.

Hotrod and Boony you guys dont happen to be from Calgary??

it is pretty well legit just have to fix the kill switch or jimmy rig some other big nasty switch on there for the kill.

nearly same ordeal as my sleds.. guy walked out and looked at them on the trailer, said they were cool, then walked back inside and stamped them promptly.

the least they can do is give us some cdn tire bucks back for the no brainer service!! :p

If you guys had to pay for the Inspection when you got to Craapy Tire you got had. The $205 you pay at the border is for the inspection. Also you don't have to take it to Crappy tire for the inspections there is a list of qualified inspection facilities on the RIV website.

They can make you deport your sled if you don't comply with the program.
However that is probably unlikely. I did everything when I brought mine up 3 years ago so that when I sold the new owner would be able to register it if they wanted to. The whole process was fairly painless it just took a little time and the whole unit is legit.

makes you wonder what the point of the c-t inspection is when the numbers are verified at the border?

Anything the government touches is a crock....as far as an inspection, would they not want to make sure it had tailights, headlights etc, and if not, what's the point? There are only a handful of places you can actually license a sled in Canada for riding on a road, which makes the inspection seem valid.But, if some joker just walks out and has a look, and stamps it as ok, then screw that, as I am sure 99.9% of them are not going to road ridden/insured for road use anyway.Mine was licensed here in B.C for riding down the streets to get to the main mountain trails, and also to the gas station, but the local police had to approve it's use, then the insurance company sold me the insurance for liability.
Each province is different, but seems like a joke out west anyway.

No problem for Alberta

I just bought an '07 M1000 from Idaho and had no issues regging it in AB. Didn't need an inspection or anything just put insurance on it and took that and the Bill of sale to Registries. Thats just a money grab by the Gov if they insist on an inspection what a bunch of B.S.:beer;

Just helped a friend of mine import a sled from WA about a month ago, RIV, etc is all non sense. We didn't even stop at the U.S. side to export, just rolled up to the crossing at Sumas/Abbotsford and declared that we were bringin the sled up, were directed to go inside and pay taxes. Went in with the bill of sale and an expired Registration from WA (no title on sleds in WA, it was a back up sled so the guy hadn't renewed the registration previous year)... they tried to hassle us about the price we said we paid for it, made us show them the ad on snowest and tried to phone the seller. In the end we just paid GST on the declared value and off we went. THEY NEVER EVEN CAME OUT TO LOOK IN THE TRAILER. NO RIV, no PST, no 72 hr waiting on the us side, no recall letter... 30 mins being hassled about the declared value but other than that easy as can be.:beer;:beer;:beer;

Yeah i got through the border no problem, I just want to be able to make it legal in Alberta so I need to get it registered which you need to get done through RIV. Cant insure it without. Maybe you know a loophole???
