This guy beat the odds- lesson: Don't give up!

CNN today has a video taken with a helmet cam of a guy highmarking that gets buried in a major avy. According to the buddy that witnessed the avy and filmed it, his friend "always" wore a beacon but this time had forgotten his. They found him 23 minutes later and he was alive. Statistically, he beat the odds both by being found alive with no beacon and by living 23 minutes under the snow. It's a good lesson for people not to give up.

There are a LOT of lessons to take from this incident:

*ALWAYS perform a beacon check in the parking lot.
*have the proper gear and know how to use it (probe too short, and appeared to be just randomly probing...proper probing searches a greater area faster).
*digging straight down once they found the victim...which means they were standing on top of him...if he had serious injuries, it could have made them worse.

The good:

*they only had 1 sledder on the hill.
*they did their best to keep an eye on the victim.

Very lucky outcome.

Here is another video from that avy, he was extremely lucky. This is why I ALWAYS wear a beacon and pack rescue gear because you never know who you might run into or what you will decide to do once you are out in the snow.

Everyone should watch that video. It's far more complete, having avalanche footage that includes pulling the guy out, a review of the avy by the investigator, and follow up interviews with the people involved going over how the gear did/didn't work. Most of all how they attribute their avalanche training to saving his life. Really good video.
