Thinking of joining search and rescue

What's it like? I've been coming out a lot of times when they're going in which got me thinking about volunteering. On the other hand I don't have a lot of time for training, I don't have a strong first aid background and the thought of a water rescue terrifies me. What can I expect?

Sounds like the best way to get that answer is ask them.........

Each rescue group is differant, just becuse you cant do something dosent mean you dont have something to offer.

Hats off to you, not a better feeling then saving another's life. Making thier day is a second best.

Good luck

I joined Search and Rescue about 6-7 years ago, I did not have any medical training at all when I started, over the years they have provided all the training I could ever want, I am only on the winter team, but try to help out in the summer whenever I can. there is nothing more rewarding than knowing that you probably saved someones life.

Just remember that 90% of the time when you get called out it is usually in bad conditions, sometimes it's not alot of fun, most people tend to forget that you are a volunteer and have a family to go home to also.

Great training and learn about lots of things.

Plus build relationships with local police, fire, medical, tow services, foest service etc.

Can help out lots and you may get perks.

Know your area, and know it well is all it takes. Someone else's life depends on it.

I've been doing it for about 4 years now. i wish more people would volunteer. It's usually bad conditions and at a bad time when you get called out. But I always tell myself If I was lost or hurt out there I hope someone would be looking for me.

I only do winter, the summer is full of farming and firefighting for me.

And I haven't been out once when it hasn't been snowing hard or rain or stupid thick fog.

I would say go for it, if you know your area really well and if you don't you should make it a point to get to know it like the back of your hand. It's one of the most important factors I believe since a lot of the ones we get are from guys getting turned around in the fog.

Hmmm. I spend most of my time lost when I'm riding. Maybe this isn't such a good idea. I like the idea of Winter only, I'd fly for them in the Summer but I don't want to jump in the water to grab someone that's drowning.

I have 10,000 hours of snowcat time but that's probably the Senior position on a rescue crew, I'll probably be the guy that prepares hot chocolate at HQ, I'm a good beverage guy.
