Thinking about upgrading to a 900 1M from Polaris Gen II

I've been thinking about selling the '99 700 RMK 144 and picking up a 03-04 900 Mountain Cat.

Think I'd be gaining much? Worth the change or should I save up for a newer chassis? My wife has an '01 500 MC and I love the way it handles in the powder and I can side hill that thing like it's my job. That's what got me thinking about the change.

What should I be looking for in a 900? Is there a difference in a 900 MC and the King Cat? Should I go EFI or carb (i'm a leave it stock kind of guy)?

Thanks-

around 2000 miles you need to look the clutches over good, you would be in another world on a 1m. I wouldn't pay over 3500 for one, you can get m-series sled for a little more than that, the 1m is still a awesome sled.

I actually got schooled by a 03 1M 800 last year I over shot my line by about 2 feet and had to turn up to hard and got stuck and a lightweight kid took the line and went up and over while I was getting out, I was impressed, I did redeem myself but never forget what can still be done with the right rider. I was on a 09 m1000

I love my 03 900 MC, I've owned polaris, yamaha, and cat. This is the best power and handling sled I've owned. It has a 162x16x2.5 track and it pulls like a freight train, and climbs like crazy. It's currently for sale for financial reasons if you may be interested. I would recomend this sled for someone who's looking for lots of power, climbing, and handling, for a good price. SH

You would gain a lot of handling and power. The newer sleds handle with less effort but the 900 does'nt take a back seat to any of them. Absolutly the bang for the buck. The M series knock the thunder out of the used price market, but day in and day out the old 900 shows it stuff. Late model 03' and the 04's were the same sled, the early 03's were the older mountain cat with a dropped chaincase. The later ones dropped a lot of weight and improved the geometry of the front and rear both. 04' was the first KK and only came carbed and the att. 20 track and titanium clutch and suspention springs. The M1 came either efi or carbed and had either a 151 or 159 camo track. The efi is nice to have and either model could use a better track than what came on them. Very good and dependable sleds that will keep you grinning as long as you stay on the throttle.

Ya baby, can't wait.!! Remember when the KTM craze hit in the nineties? I researched the 300 MXC to death. Bought one and loved it. Looking to do the same with a 900.

EFI all the way !!! I have one of each and the EFI sled will run circles around the Carb sled all day long !!! Plus the throttle pull is soo light and easy. Dont know what kind of price you are looking but if you can find a early build 05 or a 06 that has the fox shocks that would be a bonus. Go efi, get a can on it and ride the piss out of it. They are bullet proof. The only real issues with the efi is bad wiring under the oil tank. and all 900s have issues with a weak stock chain. Its a combination of the chain and a motor that is a torque monster!

Go EFI for sure. Ive got an 02 mountain cat 800 EFI and an 04 King Cat, which is the carburetor model. The throttle response on the Mountain cat is fantastic. I really like the way these sleds handle. Rixter is right. These sleds are bullet proof. they can really take a beating compared to the newer chassis. Another thing is that you can buy almost any 1m style sled for under 3500. It would be a good up grade and you wouldnt be disapointed.

Oh, and other than the color there is difference bettween the King Cats and the Mountain Cats. The 04 King Cats are all carbs while they made EFI Mountain Cats that year. 05 and 06 King Cats are EFI most of the time. They track length is different too. Mountain cats will go up to 159 while the King Cats are all 162. The King Cats also come with titanium springs all around, even the clutches have titanium springs.

I think if you look arround you could get

a King Cat with a track swap done to it. Well worth a little extra money. Drop brackets too would be a plus.

I went from a 99 700 RMK to 05KK. Huge difference in power and torque. Way more fun factor. Couldn't go back. EFI all the way.

I did have to change my forum name though!!!

My $0.02

My 2003 1m 900 - carbed - LOVE IT! Lots of power...
Bought it last year with 750 mi, after market can, powder pro skiis and riser for $3,500

Hope that helps!

I went from an 01 rmk 800 151 to an 04 KK. The 900 power is pretty impressive it runs with a lightly modded m1000 on the hills without to much trouble and doesnt give up much to the M's in the trees.
