Next time you think you had a bad day....

Yesterday Kim and I took part in the 2nd annual Vancouver Adaptive Snow Sports Challenge Cup. This is a fundraiser event to get more disabled people out on the slopes. Each team of three is honoured with a disabled skier and sent through a GS course. I tell you watching a sight impaired skier rip down the course is inspiring to say the least. However our team mate yesterday was Karl. Unfortunately Karl was in the accident on Highway 1 last year where the mini van his family was travelling in ran into problems and they pulled out of the HOV lane when their mini van was struck from behind from someone driving in the HOV lane as a single occupant driver. Karl's 7 and 9 year old brothers we killed and Karl and his 1 1/2 year old brother survived. Karl is now a T4 Paraplegic and as the amazing kid he is he was up on the slopes yesterday for his first time ever skiing!!! Imagine going through losing your two best friends(brothers) and becoming a paraplegic in one day. 3 months later, he is ripin down the Cut on Grouse. It was hard to make this video without tears. But this is my little bit of fun with Karl for Karl! Dude you are an inspiration!

Hope you enjoy it! Next years event is going to be even bigger...Hope you can be involved! www.vass.ca

Excellent post. Good on ya for giving so much consideration and kindness to Karl and making such a huge difference in his life. Video definitely chokes a guy up. The phrase "sorta puts things in perspective" is often used but seldom understood. This planet needs more people like you. Rep to you! :beer;

Awesome! Keep this up top!

:DGreat Post. Thanks for sharing that video. That really just helps you focus and remember what really matters! Thanks for putting in the effort to help others out and to be able to share that experience. I would like to live my life with just a portion of the courage that those kids do.

I grew up with a kid who was paralyzed from the waist down and he skied on a mono-ski chair. He was better than I was. He would launch jumps and cliffs and everything and every time he was on the hill he would never complain or anything. He was just out there getting the absolute most out of every moment on the mountain.

Again, thanks!

Kam:)

Thanks guys I have only been in the sledding community for 4 years and find it one of the most generous and cool communities out there. We all try to do a little to help others. This was just my lucky day to get to show Karl his first day out on the slopes...

We can all lose perspective and it is these things that remind us that we all have it pretty dam sweet....happy riding...

WAY TO GO KARL!!!!

That was AWSOME! Brought a tear to my eye to see people so giving!!! Congrats on a job well done!!!

Great deal... they do the same thing here in the hills for hanicapped people.. Its a amazing to see the smiles on their faces.. makes it all worth while

I will never forget the time I took two guys out snowmobiling in Colorado, both were paralized from the waist/mid down. We had a blast and it was the first time they had ever back country ridden. It certainly wasnt a fund raiser like this, but hats off to the participants most of all!!!!

Congrats, we had the Colorado Special Olympics at Copper Mtn and the Disabled Olympics at Winter Park. I worked for Intrawest for 15 years and it never ceased to amaze me the enthusiasm that these athletes exhibited. No woo is me attitude. Inspiration for your life. When my chips are down I think of these people and my problems seem so minuscule.
