take that back, im sure theres somethhing wrong with it..

its a 2004 with 60 domething on the clock.. started this rattle/knocking today.. i know, they all rattle and knock but, this is different. on lite acceleration particularily at 45-55 m.p.h. i get a really loud knocking from the what sounds like the left (drivers) side of the engine..

anyone got any ideas???? thanks!

I just had similar problem w/ my cummins... does it sound like a lifter tap on a gasser?

Check the injector harness on the #2 and #7 injectors. there is a really big problem with the connection from the harness to the injector on these model duramaxes. you can pull the harness off the injector an push a o ring pick through the connector to tighten it up. or gm sells a new harness for a couple hundred bucks... but if thats the problem there would be a big drop in power. if you can, hook it up to a scan tool, if you have any #2 or #7 injector codes then thats def the problem...

like stated it is an injector. Just take it in and they will replace all 8 for you. just hope it keeps doing it cause it can stop then you will be facing problem later. IF it does take it in and tell them to do a injector balance test.

I had 2 and 7 harness problems and the thing wouldnt hardly get out of its own way- much less run normally.

Injector rail and/or pump ping has been a little more noticable in my LLY dirtmax lately- I cant help but think about the ULS diesel!!! grrrrrr!!!!

Also check the wheel bearing hub assembly. Mine went out on the drivers side and it made some noise that could be confused with engine noise. Jack up that side and see if you can move the tire/wheel assembly- grab it on the top and bottom and try to get it to move. Mine was so bad the thing moved like an inch, inch and a half

That is almost definately a fuel knock. When the injector spray pattern is abnormal, for whatever reason, i can cause a loud knock that sounds like a rod trying to come out. What model engine do you have? You can tell by the eighth digit of the vin, an LB7 will be a 1 and the LLY will be a 2. The LB7 had numerous injector problems and the injectors are warrantied up to 200,000 miles for high return rates, not necessarily knocking, but the two problems tend to happen at the same time. You will most likely end up with all new injectors, though you may get only one replaced. There is a bulletin out there, somewhat hard to find and not well known for some reason, that says to replace all on a side when you go after one because they are so much fun:rolleyes: to get at. Mention that if the dealer says they are going to only replace one injector. If your engine is the LLY, there have only been a few injector problems, campared to the LB7, but lots of connector problems as mentioned earlier. With the connector problem, the computer shuts down four cylinders, so runnability would be severely affected and that doesn't sound like your issue.

I'm sure your dealer will take care of the problem. Let us know how it goes.

I have a problem with a rattle in steering colum??? I had the little shaft replaced and some bearing assembly, but the rattle is still there. It seems to be worse when slight turn going over bumps. Only has 60,000 Km or 42,000 miles. It's a 06 crew cab.

Its most definitely an injector... had the same thing on my 05 LLY motor. Replaced it under warranty... now go get it fixed!

That is in your slip joint in your column. Standard fix is to seperate and add this "special gease" gm gives us.

Every GM truck I have sen or had had this problem...

I just had to put a new transfer case in my '04 D-Max. Bushing between the driveshaft and the transfer case falls out, so then the driveshaft is loose in there. Then it just eats away at the transfer case. Local service shop has fixed several of them with this problem. Local parts guy had the same thing happen to his. Check on this every 20K and especially around 100K or it'll cost you. Replace the yolk and u joint while you're at it.

The new I-shafts only last so long before you need another one. Also, I've seen where the upper and lower bearings go out, lower being more common. The SIR coil can also cause a noise similar to this, but that is rare.

Agreed!

The 01-04 LB7 duramax had a lot of injector problems with a 7yr/200k warranty on the injectors for certain conditions. Dealer also plays a part in the injector warranty on whether or not how willing they are to do it. some symptoms are knocking/rough idle, gray/white smoke at idle, hard starting, diesel in oil, etc.
