They are back in buying mode, snapping up free agents like there's no tomorrow. They just sign Mark Teixiera to an 8 year $180 M.

New York has committed $423.5 million in salary in the last month, with $161 million going to left-handed pitcher CC Sabathia ($23 million over seven years) and $82.5 million on right-hander A.J. Burnett ($185 million over five).

I hope they keep losing.

a few facts about the yankees:

26 world championships (most by any MLB team or north american sports franchise)
39 american league pennants (most by any MLB team)
.567 regular season aveage (winningest aveage by any MLB team)

yeah.....the yankees suck. keep hating.

Not making the playoffs last year - PRICELESS ! ! ! !

pretty sure the yankees made the playoffs last year, sledder.

Really??? You may want to run that through your fact checker again. 2008 MLB playoffs DID NOT include the Yankees. Yanks $209M payroll in '08 got them 3rd place in AL East behind the Sox and AL East champs Rays. $161M for Sabathia, who is a great pitcher, but unless he's like David Wells will probably have an injury sometime over the next 7 years. $180M for Teixiera which was a good spend as they needed to find a 1B player. But by far the Yankees best pick up was Burnett.

The really sad thing is that no matter how much money the Yankees spend in the off season, it's not going to fix their farm club system, or lack thereof.

payroll is YES still less than last year. dropped alot of dead $$$$ they had. still have alot to get rid off too. sab. was a ok pick. not the best and his arm will be tiried from last year. burnett is a great pickup if he stays healthy, hasent in the past. tex is a good pick. farm sucks and jeter is old and needs to go down in the lineup. posada is old and cant last all year. damons a joke, matsui is hurt and never be the same, now a waste of cash. but red sox will be bad this year and rays will not play out of there minds this year. YANKEES win div by 7 games atleast but still lose to Angels in post season like they always do.(since 2000) if not they win it all

AL Playoff teams
Wildcard - Boston Red Sox

East - Tampa Bay Rays
Central - Chicago White Sox
West - Los Angeles Angels

Hmmmmm I still don't see the Yankees, how can you not know that your beloved Yankees didn't make the playoffs?

PRICELESS ! ! ! !

Nope they will never have something like the Twins farm system.....course once you get to the Twins, your just playing for the Best Fawking Farm team in baseball. All we do is bring ya up, make ya great and then not shell out the cash to keep em.

who cares all baseball sucks and it is a joke of a sport anyway. Only wimps cant play in rain. I enjoy sports that have at least some action.

I take it you've never gone into second base spikes up, or had someone come in spikes up.

gaz and sturgis sledder-

maybe you two could pitch in together and buy a calendar. last year was 2007, this year is 2008. that means the yankees made the playoffs last year but did lose to the indians. by the way, they also made the playoffs in 06, 05, 04, 03, 02, 01, 00, 99, 98, 97, 96, 95, 81, 80, 78, 77, 76, 64, 63, 62, 61, 60, 58, 57, 56, 55, 53, 52, 51, 50, 49,
47, 43, 42, 41, 39, 38, 37, 36, 32, 28, 27, 26, 23, 22 and 21 for a total of 47 playoff appearances.

Hey Scut...why don't you send us both a calendar of the Yankees in the '08 playoffs so we know what year you are talking about. Maybe it could include alot of pictures of Mrs. October, A-Rod the choke artist. Way to come through when your team needs you. It seems that you are the only one who see's '07 as last year. I guess we should be more specific for all the Yankee fantards out there and say that when you refer to 'last year' it generally means the last season completed. BTW...I'm impressed that a Yankee fan can read AND write.

hey gaz-

what's the date today?

Today is 12/24/08. Like I just said, most people refer to the season that just completed as 'last year'...especially when we are staring down the throat of the '09 season. I'm not going to argue all day about a technicality with a pissed off Yankee fan. I can understand your frustration. Hell...I'd be pissed too if my team spend $210M and only finished in 3rd place.

make no mistake, i am not a pissed off yankee fan nor am i frustrated but it is lonely at the top. the yankees record speaks for itself. they have won the most world championships and the most pennants. they also have the best regular season winning percentage and the longest, consecutive playoff appearance streak. and i think that they have made the playoffs more than any other team, but i'm not sure on that one (feel free to bust me up on that one if i'm wrong). and who cares what they spend? is there some secret award given to the team with the smallest payroll? does that team get an automatic wild card? come on, man-it's Christmas Eve. quit hatin!

The last baseball season (YEAR) was 2008. Last year's World Series Champion is the Philadelphia Phillies. The Yankees are doing their usual off season spending spree. Get over it, getting rid of Torre was the reason they didn't win last year and even with the outrageous talent pool they have, may not win it this year (I see your kind of slow, so this year means the NEXT baseball season). They can buy all of the talent they want but in the end most of those prima donnas can't even spell team, let alone play like one. Just like Dallas in the NFL, without a coach who is a leader they just flounder.

I'll give you that...the Yankees have won ALOT of championships and I will be the first to give them credit for it. Good banter back and forth BTW. And no, I don't think that the smallest payroll should automatically get the wildcard. Maybe they should have an award for the worst investment. Ironically enough, the Yankees would also hold the record for most 'worst investment' titles too. Mrs. Milano...I mean Carl Pavano, Chuck Knoblock, Pudge, A-Rod, Abreu, Hideki Irabu, Randy Johnson, Javier Vasquez, Contreras, Johnny Damon...the list is long yet distinguished.

It's funny how many people who don't like baseball are thrilled when the Yankees don't do well. BTW...when are the Yankees going to spend big on a center fielder who doesn't have a noodle arm and can hit the cut off without 3 hopping it?
