The thick heavy ice layer we have is the main ingredient in any major avy recipe...

I was draging my foot in the minimal powder we have....and noticed something under the fresh pow was trying to rip my boot off.....its a very strong thick layer of ice. I know we have all heard about avy danger and yada yada yada...

But, what i felt with my foot really has me worried for myself and others who share this sport. I ***gin hate reading about avy related deaths. So im buying a ABS pack on tuesday period!

Q: who in the SLC area stocks these packs on hand and can get me a pack out the door for under the $1000???

already been discussed here and your right, it scares the heck out of me...

Tri City in centerville had a couple of ABS packs in stock the other day, I think they had them for under $1000, I have the Escape 15, great pack with plenty of room to pack some stuff in it

top off that ice with the nice melted layer from yesterday and today.
was in the mid 40's at upper elevations yesterday and supposed to be today 2
fox 13 had snow or chance of eveyday next week, starting on Sat. WOOHOO

Think we all need to take a deep breath and let the snow fall before we start counting the avalanches. Snow has a way of bonding and compacting. I mean, its like sitting around worrying that your 401K is gone. Oh wait, that already happened!! LOL

I'm with Cory on this. One good thing is the ice layer will be down close to ground. Lots of brush to compact around.

I hope this ice layer doesnt come back to haunt anyone this year. I hope that it is close enough to the ground that your right. I just want everyone to ride, be safe and have fun

Hey did you put a beacon and probe and shovel and backpack on your xmas list yet? Riding around tower as much as you will you REALLY need some of that equipment!! LOTS of north facing STEEP slopes up there.

It's good to be scared. Depth hoar, surface hoar, rain crust, thaw freeze cycles....good to be scared. Trust your instincts. Most avy deaths are the result of buried surface hoar. This is basically the dew that forms at night on the surface during high pressure. It is in the form of crystals. Gets buried, hard to detect sometimes. Anyway...most deaths also occur early in the winter. If we can all make it thru February, odds are much better we will survive the season. When in doubt--ride the trees. Better safe than sorry. Although I wish I had one, the avy bag might inspire false bravado in some. Avy's are a tricky monster. The more I learn, the more I understand that they're not something that can be accurately predicted all the time. WAY to many factors and variables.
Better to be scared than cocky out there.
