The ski fad

What happened to all those ts owners that swapped to the yeti ski? Would love to get my hands on some used ts skis. Or even a yeti ski for the right price. Did everyone decide the yeti wasn't all it was supposed to be?

It really depends on what kind of snow you ride. If you ride a lot of deep bottomless fluff the Yeti has some advantages over the TS. If you ride a lot of trail the Yeti also tracks a little better on rutted out roads. Otherwise the TS is the better all around ski and what I will continue using. Several members of our riding group bought the Yeti skis and ended up going back to TS.

To be full disclosure it should be noted that Yeti announced changes to this years ski to try to address some of the negatives (over aggressive bite). We will find out this season how they did.

I see. Do any of your friends want to sell the yeti ski? I bought a used ts for 200 last year but this year they are a rare item to find. Will be interesting to see how the mototrax ski does.

So far I'm running three different ski's , it all depends on the condition on what ski to run . It allows me to get the most out of the condition . Sleds aren't as finicky or nimble so the idea of one ski does the job does not .

A couple of the Hawk guys figured out a simple solution for the aggressiveness of the Yeti ski for you :face-icon-small-hap

TS Ski

I have a TS ski I'll sell. I'm in Alaska so shipping will cost as much as the ski:) I'm using the yeti ski and like it.

Rush,

To clarify what the changes are now that you have stated that there are changes, and to avoid any confusion with our customers and dealers who have ski inventory and are wondering what is new.......

There are (2) changes to the YETI ski for 2017, neither will effect the handling of the ski. We have added a plate below the ski rubber to stop the holes beneath it from cutting into the rubber and causing pre-mature wear. We have also changed the outer blade, and shortened it a tiny bit to help us install it quicker.

So visually there is no difference, it is still trimmed the same.

What we did change for 2017 YETI, to improve certain snow handling characteristics:

1) the front spindle has been lowered by 1”
2) the front ski pin has been relocated by the new shape of the carbon blades.

We tested the ski pin position and multiple spindle heights to improve the heavy crusted snow handling conditions. The tests were blind, and multiple riders inputted into the final decision.

SO, no changes to the ski, only to the the front spindle.

As for the TS customers who are running our ski, and as I have posted before. It is different. If you like the looseness of the TS ski and bolt on the YETI yes it will feel different.

If you do not adjust the front pre load on the TS front shock you will have too much ski pressure and the YETI ski can be too aggressive. But also coming from a very loose ski it will feel aggressive.

The YETI ski has a 1” deeper keel and just bolting on your TS will cause more ski pressure.

So if you adjust your limiter strap if you have one, or put more preload in the TS front shock, or raise your forks in your fork clamps, or lengthen your TS strut rod placing more pressure on the front of your skid, each one of those will allow the YETI ski to handle as proper on the TS unit.

We designed the YETI ski to work with the YETI. The customers with TS units who purchase our ski are looking for more that what their TS unit offers for handling.

People who just bolt on and go may, or may not be satisfied based on the snow they ride on or the altitude, etc.

Once you dial it in, and we have many customers who have, they would never run their old TS ski again.

I type this with respect, but again unless you have lots of time on each product, in each snow condition, you make your statements based on limited knowledge, and it is distorted towards your personal bias.

I would be happy to ride with you one day.

Thanks

So this is interesting timing. I bolted a Yeti ski onto my bike yesterday and measured the weights vs the TS ski and as expected the Yeti ski produced a higher number thus more ski pressure. Currently sitting on the shop floor my limiter strap is slack so no adjustment available there. I think my first adjustment will be to drop the forks in the triples and see if I can lower the ski pressure. Jamie ,wouldn't lengthening the strut rod vs shortening it makes the situation worse?

Thanks for the response Jamie. I don't have a relationship with you so all my Yeti news comes from several insiders who share stuff with me as they would any other enthusiast. They informed me that Yeti made changes to the 2017 ski and that some of the changes were to address to over-aggressive nature of the ski in certain conditions. These are people that I trust and I simply pass the news on. It would be silly to say that since I don't own every kit on the market and don't ride every kit in every condition with every bike combination that my viewpoint on what I have experienced is therefore flawed and discounted by nature. Our snow season last year in NW Montana was bad and on the 5 or so occasions I was able to ride a Yeti they were almost all in mid-season conditions or late season. I have stated in other posts that in the deep the Yeti has the advantage.

If you read my previous posts about any negative features of Yeti they usually come with an explanation of why people like/dislike certain aspects of "X feature" and how Yeti has said to be either looking into fixing or updating the problem. I have stated that you guys have gone above and beyond for your customers to do free update kits, send out free belts for previous drive issues, and consistently take a higher road for customer driven satisfaction.

So when it comes to the ski and mid-season to spring conditions I feel like I have spent more time on it than the average non-Yeti owning bear and I do feel like I can make the judgement call that I wouldn't own it over the TS ski. Even with many people I trust saying it's king in the deep and rutted trail (which is certainly is on the trail.... excellent handling) I still wouldn't buy it because in my book right now the TS ski wins 2/3 season segments and I don't see the cost benefit of buying a ski for only the deep days. That's my current opinion and for me it's valid.

I also have much respect for you and your operation. Not everyone is going to be happy with everything. There are still things about the TS kit that I whine about and and I'm sure there are things that Yeti owners whine about. Nobody is perfect but we all love getting out there and hunting for it.

I would love to see your operation up close some day.
