THE internet could soon be made obsolete

THE internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

The latest spin-off from Cern, the particle physics centre that created the web, the grid could also provide the kind of power needed to transmit holographic images; allow instant online gaming with hundreds of thousands of players; and offer high-definition video telephony for the price of a local call.

David Britton, professor of physics at Glasgow University and a leading figure in the grid project, believes grid technologies could “revolutionise” society. “With this kind of computing power, future generations will have the ability to collaborate and communicate in ways older people like me cannot even imagine,” he said.

I was reading about this this AM. The part that worries me is the part of storing all your records online. Huge security risk IMHO
BUT, if I can download **** faster, Im all for it!;)

It is not too difficult to have backup storage for your online storage, basically just mirrors at 2 different locations.

Though if there is something that separates you from the grid, you got nothing if it is not stored locally.

So dedicated fiber optic lines with no other use would speed up connections 10,000 times?
Also they mentioned the enormous amount of energy needed to run this system... guess we will need more nuclear power plants...

The future is wireless .... not replacement cables.
This will be like phonelines all over again....except this will be obsolete before it's even installed and set up.

didn't AL Gore invent the internet !!!

Maybe it was the grid he invented and just misspoke? Like Hillery being under sniper fire:D
Those people couldn't tell the truth about taking a dump every day. "In the effort to conserve water all liberals have trained themselves to unload only once a week" OK, it's not a real quote but it would explain why they are so full of it!

dunno about the wireless thing... there's only so mcuh bandwidth that can be used... Microwave has a ton of channel capacity, but the cost of microwave components is sky-high. Then there's tuning, when the wavelength is <1mm, the slightest little bit of dirt or moisture on the RF-side components throw everything out of whack. Then you get to deal with the skin effect, where the electricity flows over the conductors rather than through them.. (which is why microwave feedlines are hollow tubes)

With the 700MHz spectrum opening up in a little less than a year, it'll bei nteresting to see who ends up with leases there (I've heard both Apple and Google are saving up for it).

I think the internet as we know it will be aroudn for quite some time... The next big change will be IPv4 going obsolete and IPv6 taking over.

word.....more and more wavelength/bandwith...it's going to be like walking around in a microwave....

You going to make tin foil hats for all of us? And a tin foil cup for the future littleryders would be nice.:p
