Nice Job! Glad to see things are working out for you. Its been dumping and the weather looks Primo for Saturday. It maybe the biggest stuckfest on record. I may stay away but you need to get the full meal deal up there. Last time I went up with 2 newbies to Baker and they didn't even get to see half of it. Just demo a sled and be gone for an hour that would make your trip.

From my own personal experience I'd strongly recomend a piece of angle accross the bottom for support.I did this a # of years ago without and made it about 5 miles and broke it in half.Hate to see the same happen for your big weekend at baker but if it does break I have a small 110 wire feed in my trailer.Good luck:)

I absolutely agree %100.

When you straightened it you guys took all the flex out of it and the first big bump you take?....BOOM.

The trailing arm is built to be flexible and you just created a very brittle section. You are very close to having a perfect fix but tell Gramps that you gotta weld a peice of angle to either the top or the bottom of the thing for support.
Trust us, We know of what we speak!
Don't worry too much about trying to perfect the way it looks.
Dont grind too much of the weld away and definitely don't hit the original metal with the grinder trying to smooth it either.
That will also weaken it.
Weld on a peice of angle, slap a 509 decal over it and you'll be able to ride that thing the rest of the sled's life!

Green to you for a great start though!

And for god's sake get some new carbides!

I agree with them that you need a doubler welded on that.
It will bend with the lightest hit now in that same spot.
I have welded up Polaris arms and always added a 6" piece of 3/4 or 1" flat strap over the bend. Many are still being used on buddies sleds with no problem. So this would go on the bottom based on the way yours bent.
Do not use angle or you will end up ripping your footwell off next time, just add a doubler in the bend direction.

Good pointand also weld it solid all around the doubler. Don't just stitch it or tack it.
I've used angle but I also try not to make a habit of hitting solid objects!:D..................Any more!

Good job there young man! :) I won't get to meet you this weekend, heading north (Revy). Enjoy the BSO and go TEAR IT UP! :D

Make sure you have a large wrench (in case there isn't a nice branch close by) and 2 (or more) hose clamps with you at all times now for when that things decides to let loose again. Because IT WILL!

HAVE FUN! :face-icon-small-coo

And for god's sake get some new carbides!

I DID! THEIR ON! To bad my right ski looks like a small bridge. Its a bit tapered in the middle and angled up. When I tightened my carbide up to the ski and looked under it, the carbide looks like a snake! Oh well, i'll put some simons on the list for next year. I'll head back down to the shop in the morning and weld a steel (flat?) bar along the bottum (only?)

And this is my "guess" on the support bar, except it will be on the other side (bottum).

Easyduzit---Great you got it fixed---But not acceptable for a pinks race:rolleyes:

So I guess I will get to keep my TNT 440 for another year:)

See ya up there.

I'd go with an angle iron on the bottom with the 'V' pointing down. That way you can use thinner stuff with equivalent strength to a thicker flat bar.

Ok, we talkin like a 2" V?, just enough to cover the bent part? Or have some overlay on either side for a bit of support? Not sure how much of the V tip i should have pointing down. hey, if i make it like 6", then i'll have another ice scraper... I did take 2 years of metal shop, but im only 19... (in 2 days... :))

I think we used something like 3/4". I don't recall how wide the bottom is but the edges of the angle landed near enough to the sides so the weld had a nice place to tie into.

Also, I'm sure your welds are strong. The problem is the old metal around the welds that was stressed and heated usually becomes brittle & weaker.

Looks like im leavin it. But this dosn't mean im not gonna jump the SH*T outa it! Just no rocks (or trees) for this weekend, how bout that. If it breaks, someone up their has a welder (forgot his name) and some scrap metal im sure...

Is saturday gonna be like watchin the Big Iron Shootout on dvd, but yer actually their? Hope so. Watchin people jump off small cliffs and sick climbs?

Its not that easy... The 99's are discontinued, and aftermarket ones are made once a year. I recently found out 97 and 98 will fit. Different color but who cares, i didn't have the money to get one this weekend anyways...
