So the big boss called today wants me to come back to work - But he wants me to get my own plane ticket, i've been working in hawaii and i'm a field superinterdent for a construction company, Do you think he's playing the economy card when he tells me they don't have the cash for a ticket, but still needs me to clean up a mess that a forman made on anouther job -WTF-been layed off for a month & half waiting on permits and they call me with this If i didn't have a place to pay for I would tell them to shove it, and no they do not put me up on the islands -- What do you think go to work or sit on my a$$, Just pissed off guy's sorry

I'm not surprised he's using the "economy card", he's not the only one doing it. You could look at it this way, if you decline, how easy will it be for him to find someone else with the same qualifications as yourself that can straighten out the mess like he expects you would do it. If he can get a guy fairly easy, guess who will be on his mind when he plays the "economy card" again making personel cuts.

Will he make you a guarantee on hours + OT?...If so go for it.

Has this boss made an appearance at this Hawian work site?. Lately?.

Ask him if he paid for his own ticket out.

No this boss does not pay for anything, flys all over the place stays where he wants, eats what he wants etc. hell i asked about our flyer miles and i got that blank look reply back over the phone. I'm the boss that's payed by the HR, i do have a companey card and all the items needed to do work - But i have responsibilty's!!! and must keep cost to a min. blah blah blah - I'll get over it and go to work to pay for the 8 new kids i just had down in california LOL.

I dunno on hawaii labor law, but when I would fly out into the remote jobs in alaska, it is law that they fly me back to where they picked me up, so you are prolly gonna be on the hook for the trip home too.

times are lean so only you can answer what to do.

Well hope he's not surprised when i USE the economy card - when things pick up and they will, I'll show him loyalty when people with the qualifications are few & far between.

Hr's?? well i'm the field super so i set the hr's, do all the tasking, equipment shipping inter island, deal with the unions and inspectors etc. etc. run the complete job start to finish. But i will not pad hr's or rip the company off just because i think i'm mistreated I'll just move on when the time is right.

I am stuck on the mileage thing and I can see your point (on all of it for sure). So, if you have to pay for your own airfare can you start your own mileage for the family?

Which island? I ask because some islands are more expense than others and jobs are tough to find right now.

I work what ever island they need me to go to most the time its kauai and Oahu, its not bad i love the islands i have a 30' cabin cruzer that at times i live on, go diving, fishing and what ever else. The big boss know's this and takes all that he can if you know what i mean.
I'll go because its good work good pay - i just would like them to take care of me the way i take care of them thats all, i give tons of extra to them because thats the way i was raised, you bust your a$$ or get it busted.

Right now employers feel they have the upper hand. I heard it out of my boss' mouth today. This whole situation is fooked.

Hawaii, boat, etc. - man that is hard to pass up esp. Kauai. Going there in April

he is right....to an extent. one thing you know as a sup is if you can the guy you have the next might be worse. how many supers are looking for a job in hawaii? how many are willing to fly there for an interview?
I try to keep myself happy with the co. if not I am always gonna remember that they hosed me and I will hold that against them. if I am not happy, I just drag up and move on.

I was faced with a similar situation this year. my co laid everyone off. it was nothing personal, we were just out of work and they made things for us to do for a few months....I understood completely. I asked about our start up date and was told late march. I told them thanks, it's been a good ride.....but I am going back to the slope.
the next day I was back to work.
good help is worth whatever it costs. IMO it is good for me and them.

Well now got the call this morning - the companey will spring for my ticket
out of seattle next week, the owner wanted to know what the hell was going
on, and all of a sudden waa laa magic ticket, and dinner when i get there
( lots to discuss ).
Now i just need to sit down with the man over me for lunch so were on the right
track, Politics suck ( lets dig damn it )
I can't wait to get back to work, i love to dig & build!
