That doesn't sound good....

1/5/2009

The avalanche danger in BC is so great, even professionals are extremely hesitant to go into uncontrolled areas for any reason.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre is out with an updated forecast and spokesperson Ilya Storm says about a meter and-a-half layer of snow is resting on a very precarious base right now, "That's sitting on maybe a 20-25 centimeter layer of thick sugary layer that's really weak. It's almost like marbles. And that sits on a crust, which really makes it like a big huge fat slab sitting on a bunch of marbles which rests on a piece of plywood, which in itself is resting on something like a bunch of popcorn. And now tilt it."

Storm says that means the avalanche hazard is high everywhere along the South Coast and along the Rockies, and the upcoming warmer weather isn't going to decrease the danger at all.

i can agree with that in my area as well, north rockies. ive done lots of digs in the past few days, and i agree , theres lots of sugar beneath a crust with 2-3 feet of powder on top. just a matter of wen
