is there anywhere to have your beacon tested for working properly, frequency, strength, etc. may be nice to know before you really find out.

What type of beacon do you have? There is a sequence on the Pieps to check the frequency drift. Also, we are a service center for Pieps and can check it out for you using our diagnostics tool.

Practice often with your beacons and you will know if they are working.
okay, lets try this again, i have 2 beacons, which one is not working properly or are they both wonky. the easiest, would be to test with a third beacon, will have to test later. think i found the problem, was checking them with a cell phone in the pocket.
what? don't think your following the program. i usually don't test in the summer, and was getting them ready for the season. keep trying though you may eventually help someone. eventually, maybe- maybe not.

I get what you're saying. I can't think of better advice.
Ever heard of a walk by test? Every time you go out one guy in the group goes into search mode and "walks by" everyone else. Pretty simple way to know if your beacon is working. This can be done in the parking lot before you leave, and takes about a minute.
ten to one if you walked into BCA headquarters and asked for a beacon test they would grab another beacon and do a version of the "walk by" alternating search/transmit with each beacon.
