TELLURIDE (AP) - Sheriff's officials say a Telluride man has died in an avalanche near Telluride Ski Resort.
San Miguel County Sheriff Bill Masters says 38-year-old Nathanael Soules was skiing alone when the avalanche occurred Monday in an area that's outside the resort but can be accessed by resort lifts and a U.S. Forest Service entry point.
Two skiers in the area found Soules' body about four feet under the snow. They said he had no pulse and had massive head trauma.
Soules was wearing an avalanche "air bag" designed to help people caught in snow slides. Sheriff's officials say it had been deployed but appeared to have been damaged. They say it was deflated when it was recovered. Masters say Soules' survivors include his wife and a son.
