Last Friday some friends and I went riding and I had a bone-head wreck on the trail. I was wearing my Tek-Vest (Thank GOD!) and STILL broke 2 ribs. One up under my armpit, and one on the front of my chest where I landed on my avy beacon (worn outside my Tek-Vest, under my coat). The wreck was nothing special- I was riding too fast and hit an off-camber mogul in the trail that pitched my sled up on it's side and threw me off the sled onto the hardpacked trail. I landed on my side.
My Tek-Vest has saved me multiple times from injury and this time I suspect things would have been much worse had I not been wearing it. I know a lot of people don't wear one for various reasons, but I sincerely believe that the reason I was able to ride out (slowly and painfully) instead of being flown out was because I had my Tek-Vest on. I hit hard and think I'd have a lot more broken bones without the vest. It also spread the impact out enough that I didn't bruise on my skin.
Just my 2 cents.
