I have an 08 XP 800 with out electric start. NO battery! I have a GPS and I would like to power it via the sled rather than 2 double A batteries.
I know that the XP has AUX. wires for such items as a power adapter. Do I need a 12 V battery to run my gps? My thoughts are that the sled will power the GPS while the sled is running but not when it is shut off.
I have a Garmin 60csx, if what I think is correct, when I shut off the sled will the GPS automaticly switch to the doulble a back up or will it shut off??

Thanks for the help!!

GPS should switch over to bat power as long as batteries are good.

Add a rectifier to your aux wiring to make DC voltage out of AC that comes from the stator. Then hook GPS power to the rectifier.

No rectifier needed as the newer Doo's(Revs and XP's)are already DC not AC power.Just wire a 12v cig outlet under the gauge assembly. The garmin should be set to change to battery power when the sled is not running.

It's pretty easy to do, actually. Most newer GPSs will accept 12V DC, if your sled has that then just tap right into that. The current draw on a GPS is so low you really don't have to worry about power. Just tee off a 12v line off your hood and throw on the right connector.

My GPS is a "low voltage" model, runs on 7V. I put together a cheap circuit, bridge rect. into capacitor, into 5V regulator, then out to a DC-DC 5-7V converter. From there it goes out to GPS. This ensures really clean power and will also accept 6-30V AC or DC. Same circuit also allows me to power GPS from USB when it's talking to my computer.

When the sled isn't running, the GPS silently switches over to internal battery power.

I don't have a starter!!

Not starter - STATOR

Cool - I'm not a Doo guy and I figured with no EFI it'd all still be AC.

On your GPS go into "setup" off the main menu then to "system" and then move down to "external power lost" select "stay on" That way when you shut your sled off the GPS will switch to the GPS battery's

XC700116, Sorry about the starter comment, As you can probably see I know very little about electronics..
Mountainbigbull, thanks for the set up info!!
