Team Secondary Damage

Just bought this sled and wanted to check out the clutches. Sled only has 750 miles on it. See photo. Is this a belt deflection issue? Is this normal wear or is the deflection too tight? Also, I noticed before I even took the clutch off, there was a little bit of play. Is this normal? Do I need more shims on the shaft? Sorry about all of the questions, but I am brand new to Poo. Been on an '08 XP for the past three years. Wanted to try something different.

Was there a washer between your clutch? There should a big washer for your sheving adjustment. Looks like your 3 bolts was rubbing onto it.

What he said^^^ There should be a large gold washer between the clutch halves to stop that from happening. It is the one bolt that adjusts your belt deflection that holds the 2 halves apart that is gouging that. Looks mostly cosmetic at this point although it is bound to be causing a binding issue as well. As to the play with the clutch on the jackshaft, that is normal. That is what is refered to as "float" and what some to the doo's and cat's to try to help with belt life and alignment.

Not sure what you mean by "3 bolts". There is only one Jam not on the outside of the sheave. No other bolts.

Older Poo clutches had 3. The teams only have one. Look on the outer clutch half.. It's the one on the outer face that is an allen head screw with a lock nut. Now flip it over and you will see that it pokes all the way through the clutch. Turning it in forces the clutches apart and gives you more belt deflection, out, tightens it up. In any case, that bolt is rubbing against your inner sheave. There should be a washer between the two halves. Btw, those washers get grooved up too and need to be replaced every couple years depending on what kind of mileage you put on each year.

I am attaching two photos of the "gold washer" One side is called Sheath side which is touching the damaged sheath. It is almost like the clutch is wobbling causing the jam nut bolt to press too hard into the gold washer and thus into the sheath. Is that possible? Any thoughts?

Oh right...sorry my bad I just overhauled my buddy's xlt 600 clutches..but yeah if those grooves aren't deep and just minor scuff up I would just scotch brite to get the burrs off and install a new washer and set up the belt deflection...make sure you take a good look at the buttons and helix too

Was there any spring tension when you pulled your clutch apart it looks like the spring wasn't holding the clutches together

D8, I can actually feel a groove in the sheath. Do you think the bolt was just set to tight and since there is only 1 deflection bolt, it seems that it would cause a single pressure point. Seems like 3 bolts would be better....

Yeah I can see if it was set in too far and had too much belt deflection and spring pressure pushing against the screw if that make sense. If the previous owner never touched it you might be able to get warranty since the dealer didn't do proper adjustment...worth a shot

Everything shown here looks exactly like mine. Looks like normal wear to me.

Normal wear for that clutch. Caused from the clutch backshifting.
The washer comes in contact on one side with the single belt deflection adjusting screw and the other side comes in contact with the clutch sheeve half during a "complete" backshift. The washer is scrubbing against the sheeve half causing the wear shown in your picture.
It's a good idea to take the clutch apart and clean it cleaned up the best you can. As theultrarider stated you'll want to replace the washer if it becomes quite worn and or starts cupping.
Even if you get a new clutch it will look the same within the same amount of miles.

Sorry guys I thought it shouldn't be all scuff up...good to know...so how do you know if it's in a bad shape like what should you be looking for

When ya leave the belt on in the Off season in a humidy Garage

Wait till dec. to clean your clutches you will know!!
