Tapex clutch heat.. How much is too much?

Just got back from a road ride on my front mount apex, 2-3Ft light powder no base. I was going quarter throttle with short bursts of half throttle to break in the new belt. I stopped a few times to check the clutches and they were HOT. I had a bushing issue last year and have since had all the clutches gone through by the guys at Alpine and have new spring, weights and bushings. I was just wondering if the clutch heat was normal or not??:confused:

Mine did the same thing last year with the side vents already on it. It would burn my hand when I touched them, then blow the belt. This summer I put a vent kit in front of the primary clutch and ordered a 3" fan for the clutch guard. My problem is that I have to run longer belts with the rmi drive and they don't last as long as yammi belts do. If you start blowing belts, then I would be more concerned with it.

No signs of wear on the belt, but I did only put 10-20km on today.:confused:

Just found this qoute on the Hartmann website "The Yamaha 8DN belt is very hard and has a high amount of slipping, which will create heat and loss of acceleration. (The only "good" thing, is that it will last forever)." Maybe this is normal then?

No, it is not normal i would say, if i drive as smooth as you discribe i can hold on to the sheaves with bare hands and it feels a little warm, but i can keep the hands on the sheaves without burning them, they feel just cosy.
Do you say both clutches have slippage (gets hot)???
Did you clean the new belt, and the sheaves with warm water and soap?
It can also be to litte sidepreassure on the belt that let the belts slip, do you know what your calibration is?
I drive about 2000miles /year average and substitute the belt every start of a new season, and keep the old belt, that still is almost like new, as a spare.

Yes the primary and secondary are both hot, the secondary hotter. I have my doubts the belt was washed, I just had everything replaced and inspected by the dealer. I am not sure what my calibration is:confused:

If Alpine did the clutching to there specs it should be fine. Make sure that the secondary is lined up good and you might have to remove a shim or two to let the clutch float some. Make sure you have a good film of grease on the jackshaft so it can float. I have similar clutching and I go through 1 belt a year...and I am by no means easy on them.

no that is not normal, something is not right. you may have more slippage than normal because you are breaking in a new belt in powder but you should be able to run without getting the clutches smokeing hot. I would check the belt deflection and ask your dealer if he checked alignment.

Yes it's to Alpine's specs, first ride since I got it back from them. I'll check the jackshaft as well and make sure its greased.;) Are your clutches running cool?

Yea I wonder if breaking in the new belt w/ zero base would cause some heat?

I really couldn't tell you how hot they are...I just know that i don't have a belt or a clutch problem, and that is good enough for me. Your belt will probably slip some during break in, but if your too easy on it, you may run the risk of glazing it a bit. Crack the throttle on that thing and break er in right.lol:D

Lol 10-4 on that;) Spoke to Dean today and he said this is normal and basically can never touch his clutches, sooo we'll see what happens tomorrow's ride.:beer;
