Talk me into a pro in 15 minutes!!!

Looking to upgrade my wifes sled from an 01' sxr to a 13' pro rmk. I have a 12' turbo Nytro 144" 2' track for myself

she only trail rides and only rides 5 times a year, she does not go over 50 mph.

Reason im looking at a pro 800 is that it will be fine for her 50 mph trail rides, then when she doesnt come to Michigan or the Mountains i have 2 to choose from!

Aloso looking at doing some serious susp upgrades to my Nytro to make it handle closer to the way the pro does. Which i would not do if i had a pro.

Any opinions???

I don't want to start a war on which sled is better and what not but I had a boosted nytro and did everything g I could to make it handle better. Skinz on the front end and timber sled on the back. It helped but once I tried to pro rmk I just decided to sell the nytro....

For the type of riding you say your wife does, here is my take. If the sled is for your wife and you want her to be comfortable/happy when riding and you don't want her to stop riding with you, I think that is the wrong sled for the job. There are better handling, more stable trail handling crossover sleds that will be a better choice. (Example: Switchback Assault 144" 600) Now if it is for you to have a second sled to choose from for the most part it will do, but not as good as other models for the application. A Crossover model will be much smoother in Power Delivery (meaning clutching and engine), Ride, Steering, Suspension, etc. A happy wife, makes happy husband, makes happy home. :face-icon-small-ton

had a pair of 08 nytros - loved the motor but everything else sucked! Picked up a pair of 600 pro RMK and couldn't be happier! 1000 miles on each one last year without any Nytro issues (slides, ball joints, twitchy steering, etc.) plus it went where I wanted it to go. Handling was night and day - just add snow and go!
We ride 0 to 3000' backcountry - no trails so 155" 600 was all that was needed. fuel usage was comparable to the Nytro and oil use minimal. smoke only till it warmed up then no smoke. For trails get the std RMK - lack of front cooler in marginal conditions was the only downside.

if you want to make your wife hate riding trails going from a 01 SXR to a pro RMK should do the trick.

The Pro RMK is a mountain sled, its not going to corner or ride anything like the SXR does now. Even at 35mph its going to be trying to pick up the inside ski in the corners.

The SXR is is not worth selling at this point in its life. Just keep it and buy the pro for yourself. Then come January put the nytro up for sale and take the first real cash offer you get on it.

I has on Yamaha for 25 yrs and rode them all, stock and boosted. The pro is so much more fun and so much easier to ride you will be laughing as your carving through the trees and pulling a sidehill your Nytro would never think about holding. Eric

I wouldn't want a Pro for trail riding period. The standard RMK, as suggested earlier, would be way better if you have to put her on this chassis so you have a spare. I hate riding just 7 miles of trail up the mtn at 30-40 mph, the Pro is terrible for this, I think your wife would hate it too.

Buy the Pro for yourself, I think it is as much fun as you can have on a sled right now in the mountains, the UP being a notable exception, I think the Pro would be a hoot there too. The handling is so trustworthy that you cut rediculous lines and pull them off with ease. I go WAY more places than I used to, tight technical places because now, it's REALLY fun, not a battle.

got my wife the 14,600 144 assault last year and she loves it , likes the wider boards and a little wider seat. had to put scratchers on it for the trail but other then that it's been great . the 600 will surprise you, i go 250lbs. and it packs me around with a smile on my face

Decided to get myself a Pro and my wife can ride the turbo nytro. Waiting to see if I can find a deal at Haydays before I commit to a dealer.

I wrote off Polaris YEARS ago and I hope I don't get disappointed, although, I do NOT think i will.

I looked at 3 Pros at a local dealer in St. Cloud and every one of them needed starters and they had anywhere from 450 to 1200 miles. Is this a big problem with these sleds?

Thanks for the feed back.

The starters on the pros don't sound anything like a "normal" starter. So if your just going off of sound, There may not be anything wrong.

Have you looked at left over 14's? They got to be very close to what used sleds are going for. Eric

Sell the Turbo Nytro and get yourself a stnd RMK then snag her an Indy 600 SP. Not to be a Dick but I really don't get it when people by so far out of segment that it makes no sense.

My Pro is ridden 1/2 trail and 1/2 off trail. On the trail I have to constantly watch the temp gauge because it gets hot quick even with scratchers down depending on how hard packed the trail is. A standard RMK has better cooling.

Handling on trail is ok as long as that trail is straight

I really don't mind trail riding my Pro RMK. I had a 163 and we always race back to the cabin off the mountain. It just requires a lot more body english and input. I like the ski-lift and riding the apexes of the corners.

If she sits on the sled and doesn't want to move... definitely stay AWAY from the Pro.

DPG that's what I was thinking. Advice was asked if a Pro RMK would be a good choice for his wife that rides trails, and now she gets stuck on a Turbo'd Nytro. Unless something was missed on her riding abilities, it looks like he's trying to get her to stop riding with him. lol

250lbs and the sled still keeps up with 800s?

Did you have to do anything to the clutch or other mods?

When I bought the nytro I did 50/50 backcountry and trail. Now I do 90% backcountry.

I told my wife if she doesn't like the nytro that we would trade it for a different sled.

We have decided this mutually and she is perfectly fine with it.
