Take over...again??

Hey all im new here i race quads and i got into snowmobiles 2 years ago. I race a 89 trx250r with a load of mods... five years ago the atv racing industy was all 250 2 strokes racing now... lets just say the 450 has taken over...

but with snowmobiles?? idk i mean 4 strokes need almost twice the displacement to make the power... then came the turbo is it gona be the same way with snowmobiles? are these turbos as reliable as a semi built 2 stroke?

weight--- this is the limiting factor in my eyes i mean turbos and extra cylinders add weight... not good for mountain sleds.

reliability--- which is better for reliability??

will they take racing eventually?

will they take the mountains eventually?

will it be a split?

j/w u guys $.02

First off,
welcome to the forum.

Other than that, you have asked the questions we have been aruguing for 4 years now.
This is an on going discussion that changes every year with the newest round of sleds.

Yea i suppose it is a itchy topic around here. I saw this happen in the atv and dirt bike industry, but snowmobiles make alot more power so that means heavier motors and that goes back to fourstokes needing turbos and bigger displacements to make the power. I just hope that that is enough too keep the two strokes dominant.

At some point this was said about road racing, there's nothing more weight sensitive than a lightweight race bike, when the CBR600 came out there was a lot of different 2 strokes out there and it just swept the field and in 2 years 2 strokes were gone
Moto GP was interesting, the first year the 4 stroke hit the ground it wiped out the 2 strokes and set lap records
1 thing that lot's of people seem to be missing is that a sled that is 30 - 50lbs heaver does'nt suck

I know that eh industry is heading that direction(four strokes) but it is going to be VERY HARD to get the 2 stroke out of me. I love them, love the sound, love the smell, love the simplicity. I agree that four strokes are going to continue to evolve and some day that is all you will be able to buy. I guess I better start stocking up on king cats!

In my opinion, Yamaha makes a fine sled.
I would own one in a heartbeat for flatland riding.
If highmarking was my thing, I'd slap a turbo on one.
But for boondocking, I fail to see a reason to muscle around an extra 100 lbs.
Even if, as some say "you don't feel the weight when you're riding it", well I
will most certainly feel it when getting unstuck.

Don't dig graves for the 2 strokes just yet!

having come from the road racing world in the late 80's and early 90's, I witnessed first hand the change over. My first race bike was the first year CBR600 Hurricane. Like 0007 said, It was the first 4stroke that could compete with the 250 F2 2 strokes (not equal, but close). As soon as Ducati made the commitment to V-twin 4stroke, the writing was on the wall. Now, no more 2 strokes.

What amuses me is the emotional response that both sides have. Yamaha has upped the ante with the nytro...it's as light or close as all but the XP. If the XP is reliable, then SkiDoo has also upped the anti and ensured the 2stroke will stay alive and competitive for at least a couple more years.

For the mod guys...hard to argue against the Nytro. Time will tell with the XP.

IMO, ride what you want and let the others do the same...all the bashing gets OLD...yawn.

When your 2 stroke gets stuck, you don't have to muscle it around?

I can barely get my sled rolled over when I'm at 11-12k feet. I put a Tphaser on it's side and I couldn't budge it. i'm sorry but the extra weight is the straw that breaks my back. If it works for great, but I'll keep what I've got, it works for me.
