synthetic oil

What are you guys using for oil in your sleds?

I am still using the standard mineral oil from doo in mine.

Have been having a lot of trouble lately starting my sled when it is cold. Granted it was really cold for a long time.

Saw a video at work about how synthetic oils help when its cold and starting equipment and it got me thinking about changing oils.

Still use standard oil in my truck, but I am pretty sure I will be changing that as well.

Any drawbacks to synthetic other than cost?

If I were to switch to synthetic what would be the proper way to do that? Just start using it?

Figured I would just go with the doo synthetic oil.

You should burn most of the existing oil before you change oils.

The only drawback to running synthetic in your truck is that it will find a bad seal, or a leaky gasket. If there is a way out, it will find it. Not a problem unless you have an old motor...

Great stuff. I have heard people talk about their diesels seemingly having more power with synthetic. Putting synthetic in my 7.3L f250 next oil change.

I alwayse run synthetic in my 2 strokes...

I am going to try the Amsoil in my vehicles with my next oil change. Talked to the rep here and he sold me on it. 25,000 miles between oil changes. NICE!
Anyone else run this in their cars?

dont forget that is with oil samples drawn. not just 25k without doing anything.

i would stay with a mineral based oil for your sled. there is a pretty strong argument the it lubricates better than synthetic in a 2-stroke application. doesn't seem to mix with the gas as well if you do use synthetic don't use amsoil. pretty much junk when it comes to sleds. have no idea how it is for cars/trucks. i think the only two real synthetic options for sleds would b.e redline or klotz. i am currently running redline myself but when i this gallon is gone i'll probably go to a mineral based oil. keep in mind the main benefit to synthetic is who long it lasts. but in a sled the oil is inside a motor for far less than a second. so where is the advantage? cleaner power valves? sorry, i'd rather have a better lubricated motor and have to clean my power valves a couple times a year. but that is just my opinion. do some searching there have been a number of topics on this in the past. interesting reading.

Been running Doo mineral in my 99 summit 670x since new. No problems at 4500 miles. Valves had some hard carbon deposits after 3,000 miles. Took some scraping with a penny but they cleaned up nicely.

Ditto the above for my 95 670 but the carbon deposits weren't as difficult to remove as the 99. Suspect this is because the 95 runs a little too rich (cooler) whereas the 99 is jetted better.

Been running Cat synthetic in my 04 900. No problems either. Around 1600 miles. Have cleaned valves 2-3 times. They were a little gummy with very little hard carbon deposit. Cleaned up easily with little scraping.

I just feel more assured running what the manufacturer recommends.

babbit bearings in a 4 stroke diesel don't need oil to prevent them from rusting.......they cant. roller bearings in a sled do. your truck wil likely never sit for 6 months w/o ever turning over......you sled might. synthetics are a good choice n a presure oil system, they have superior viscosity and adhesion properties and can fight heat considrably better.......in a two stroke none of those things apply. a good ol' dino or mineral oil can stay blended w/gas, has far better cling/rust protection and as I can attest, lube just fine. every sled I have owned for the last 5 years has had a high strung tripple in it spinning way fast and always on the edge for jetting and I have never in 20k miles had a lube related breakdown. ask the synthetic guys that let their sleds sit for a summer how many lose the crank on ride #2 the next year....most alway from rust.

do some research on jaso ratings.........see how all oils are real close in protection values.

my coments would not apply to the e-tec stuff. I do not have a full grasp on them yet so I can't comment.

another thing to think about, ask any logger wha they run for 2-t oil and I bet there are not many if any running designer oils. they run way higher rpms, lack water cooling and get minimal warm up time............food for thought
