Symptoms of a Split Pipe???

I am trying to diagnose a strange cut out/bog that has developed on my sled.

I have not pulled the reeds yet to have a look....

However, I thought I could feel some warm air coming from the expansion chamber on my pipe that is wrapped. I don't want to cut off the wrap to have a look.

I did pressure test the system with a cold pipe, and found no leak in the suspect area. Is it possible that a split pipe would only leak when warm? If it was leaking, even when wrapped would there be visible evidence of the leak under the hood? What run ability issues do people experience with a split pipe?

I don't have any boost leaks on the cold side, and the hot side seems tight when tested cold to 10 psi.

Nothing on my setup has changed, but my sled cut's out at slow speeds just prior to, or as boost comes on, but once in boost runs great. The cut out is intermittent, and easily ridden around, but still suspect IMO.

You positive it's not coming from the inner junction of the Y pipe? I've seen a couple split there, and only cause minimal issues, but it was a pain in the azz to diagnose.

Im sure the y pipe is tight. I'm soap and watering everything and it all looks good. The pipe itself seems fine, unless it just leaks when hot.

did u inspect the Y pipe for any cracks

My Y -pipe went out on me about 3 weeks ago. also about the same time , my 2ndary became loose and ruined the BDx belt deflection adjuster. had a big blowout on the brake side along the lower part of the weld, or seam.
Sled would not start.

Matt, you could warm it up and then give a big shot of oil and watch for smoke to come if it is leaking. You can spray some right into the intake boot and stink the garage up. You could have a bad injector and then it would run fine once the secondary injectors kick in. It seems I finally got rid of the bog mine had, trouble is I'm not sure what I did to fix it. I messed with a lot of stuff all at once. Could be your reeds are not closing up tight enough without a little boost going through them.

Since you can make boost and its OK, thats a real good indication of no crack.

A few things to put on your check list
Throttle safety switch in throttle block
Fuel pressure at low rpm
Worn clutching components
Tps loose or bad

Good luck

My sled has been doing the exact same thing. I have been looking everywhere for the problem and have been unsucesfull. On Sunday my Y-pipe fell off. lol It looks like it had some older cracks in it.

If your pipe was split, it would be really loud. Like an open mod lake racer. Sorta make a BRAAP BRAAP noise when you hit the throttle.

How did you pressure check the system? How high? I always go 5 lbs higher than my normal boost level. There is always 3-4 psi higher back pressure in the pipe than in the air box side. What oil are you running in your turbo? Some oil can build up/heat bake and cause gummed bearings in the turbo.

I'm feeling pretty confident the pipe is not cracked or split but have not totally ruled it out. The Y pipe is good. I pressure tested it by plugging the exhaust and capping the turbo and adding 10-12 psi. I found a cracked reed cage on the mag side tearing it down. Hopefully the slight leak it was causing is what was causing the occasional low throttle hesitation.
