Switched power for afr gauge , tunnel coolers:)

Looking for a good spot to hook up AFR gauge for switched power. Don’t want another switch to forget to turn off. 13 ktm 450 sxf.
Also sneak peek at tunnel cooler project. Almost done. Ported the head , polished valves, added 13.5 piston. Would like to find some plastic or lighter 3/4 elbows for tunnel cooler , brass is heavy but most I find are not rated for the heat, any ideas.

Do you think you will need both of those heat exchangers? I haven't ran a dirt bike with only heat exchanges yet but I going to start with one about the size of one of your on my 380 2 stroke as recommended by another forum member on here. Also what kind of coolers are those? Off a sled or aftermarket?

Picked up the coolers at hay days for 10 bucks, they said yamaha srx on them. What a great deal ??? 200 dollars later with misc parts i have my tunnel coolers. Lol. I have no idea if I need both that’s why I put a valve in to shut one off if needed. Tired of trying to keep bike temp in correct range from trail to pow to trees. Fun to experiment

Oh yeah that's the way to buy parts lol good to know the "srx" coolers seem pretty well suited for a snow bike. I'm planning on using polaris running board coolers, I think they are a bit longer that the srx, but narrower. I think I'm going to try one and see how it goes. I can always add another.

You have a lot of cooler and thats not a bad thing, in our West Mont. riding with coolers the biggest issue isTOTALLY covered engine and no radiators to keep the heat up around 190 on KTM 450. Big performance gain when you run that temp on most 4 strokes.

For switched power I add a relay, run a new fused lead to it for my loads right from the battery, and use the white/black wire from the existing relay (beside the battery on the right side of the bike) for my trigger to energize the new relay. This white/black wire is a ground signal and is switched by the ECU when the bike starts so make sure to wire your relay accordingly. It also has a time delay on shut off, about 20 seconds which is nice. This method will not add any load to existing circuits on the bike, that ECU wire you identify does not have capacity to run much, too small of a conductor to handle any significant draw.

Thanks for that info. I suck at wiring and trouble shooting electric stuff. Need it all laid out for me. You said wire relay accordingly? So you think I will have problems with the Ecu wire running just the afr gauge? So far it works fine but only let bike warm up. You explained well above and thanks but you have type of relay used? Part number?

Tunnel cooler will be nice to warm up hands on trail if needed , now trying figure out muff pot mount on cooler:) maybe coolers will help keep box warm also?? Have 2 trips on the Russian 2.6 stiff lug track last year and I am in love with it. 125.8 inch length , best track I have been on to date. Out climbs older 137 MH track ! Getting excited.

You may be fine using that ECU wire, depends on the draw.
The additional relay is a better option and you can use it to power an other accessories as well. The relay is just a standard 12V DC automotive relay. There are different amperage ratings available, 20amp or higher will work fine.

Amazon product ASIN B016CX2ZPQ
Wiring a relay is pretty simple stuff, search on line and you will get all the info you need. Coles notes version is this.

relay-wiring_example2.gif

Run an in-line fuse from the battery positive to terminal 30 and 86, use 14 ga wire to terminal 30 and you can run a smaller wire like 18ga. to 86. Run a 14ga. wire from terminal 87 to your AFR and anything else you want to run on switched power ,ie. lights. Run a small trigger wire (18ga.) from terminal 85 to the white/black wire on the existing relay that is mounted next to your battery on the right side of the bike (kind of hidden).

This new circuit will power up when you start the bike and will shut down about 10-15 seconds after the bike shuts off.
