Supplies/Emer Gear, what do you carry?

I live in the Gunnison, Colorado area. Prime mountain sledding. When I go out for a day of sledding I am not far from my home, sometimes I don't even need to trailer depending upon snow etc. Even though I may be going out for only a few hours I always plan for the worst. I always have water, food, a knife, saw, compass, extra socks, shirts, gloves and a coat liner. I also carry in my little bag of goodies on the back of my sled a plastic bag that has fireproof matches, some newspaper, candles, bottle of 70% alcohol and a handful of fatwood. Fatwood is little pieces of very pitchy pine that lights very easily with just a match. Great starter wood. Also a flashlight with extra batteries, a Navy Seal strobe light that does white and or blue and a Spot Messenger. I carry Nitro Pills also, just in case, you never know.

Just curious what some of you carry. It sounds like a carry a lot but it really has very little weight to it and is very compact. Could be a lifesaver. I avoid avalanche areas like the plague. Oh, I also carry a shovel under my hood and a Harmon Jack and Bunge. Whoops, I also carry a couple of those little Kotex deals with the string on them.

I have a neighbor who carries NOTHING and I mean absolutely nothing. The guy is a moron................

I approch it from the angle of planning on spending the night. I take everything I would need.

If you have never tried making a fire in a wet blowing storm try it. One of the reasons I carry a small camp stove too.

I carry to much crap either way !

One suggestion, Keep your critical survival gear on you. This way if, even avaoiding avy areas, you will always have it.

I carry a bunch of crap tooo, the things I value the most are:

Hamon Jack
shovel
tampons :o Not for their intended purpose!!!!
magnesium fire starter
3 emergency blankets

Survival kit

I took a week long pilot survival and evasion course with the British air force back in the late 90's. What I was taught was:

The main factor for surviving the elements is to stay dry. Dry means warm. If you get wet the chances for living are very slim even in summer. Food/water etc are way down the list for surviving a couple of days.

And with all the seriousness, here is one of my favorite lists to carry. We have carried it before and when you show the contents it just makes everyone laugh.

Survival kit contents from Dr. Strangelove:

1 .45 automatic.
2 boxes of ammunition.
4 days' concentrated emergency rations.
1 drug issue containing antibiotics, morphine, vitamin pills, pep pills, sleeping pills, tranquilizer pills.
1 miniature combination Russian phrase book and Bible.
100 dollars in rubles.
100 dollars in gold.
9 packs of chewing gum.
1 issue of prophylactics.
3 lipsticks.
3 pairs of nylon stockings.

JCornel is absolutely correct. Shelter and warmth are the Number ONE concerns without a doubt. You can go without water for a few days, you can go without food for a week or more but if you are wet you will die very quickly.

Personally speaking I believe the one thing to have that would save your life is the Spot Messenger or something similar. You hit the 911 button and then go about getting settled in for the night and wait for help to arrive.............Can't beat that............If you are in the trees of course you will need to find a clearing to get the signal up to the satellite.................
