Studs or no studs

Ok, for all you trailer towers.....do you run studs or no studs on your tow rig.

Using a 2007 LB GMC 4x4 w/ a duramax engine w/ stock bridgestone all season tires(or at least that's what they call them), I tow a 4 place v-nose mirage trailer loaded with 4 sleds and gear.

The other day on a return trip, road was ice (the freezing rain kind of sheet of ice), wind picked up, I was doing about 30 mph and in 4-wheel drive. All of a sudden, I'm being pushed all over the road, and barely could keep it straight......bare in mind I'm on a straight stretch of roadway.

Let's not even start with the condition of the sno-park when I got there.....I can say my sleds are easier to unstick than the truck was......

Ran all last year without studs, virtually same tow rig only the 2004 model, and never had a similar experience.

This is the second time this year that I've felt slip on icy roads....both were on the straights.

So I'm looking at studs I guess, for $1K (thank you 17" tires), to keep from being in the ditch.

Just wondering if that's what most of you do, or something different.

I would pick up a st of 16" wheels off Ebay to equip with studded snows.
2 sets makes it easy to remove the studders when you don't need them, keeping them in good shape for the next trip.

Also, it's illegal to run the studs in the summer in most states anyway.

i dont think 16" rims with fit the newer brakes, im preatty sure on my dodge they wont work,
....
also tow a 26 ft 4 place with 4 sleds + 1 in the back of the truck and all the gear and gas for 5 people, just got new tires on my 04 3/4 ton dodge and they made a world of difference between the bfg rugged trail tires that were stock and the new style big o at's tons of sipping and do really good in the snow and ice. also went from 265-75-17 stock to 315-75-17

but i also though that they didnt go to 17" rims untill the new body style chevys

i alway run studs in the winter and have them mounted on black steel wheels looks sharp and saves the chrome from the slop missoula sprays on the roads

i have not had a problem with traction yet this winter
