stuck/winch

When I've been stuck, I have never used my shovel but stoomped the snow, lifted the sled to it, filled the hole with snow, lifted back, and drove out, and sometimes get stuck again. It's either deep fresh snow or small trees with air that do it.

I want to mount a winch on my Yamaha Phazer but no sites show mounting method. If a sled weights 600 lbs, what size winch is adequate and how big/long wire? It seems the higher load small winches have the same motor hp...just different gearing and wire size. I figure I need more wire instead of bigger wire, snap shakles, and an extention 3/8 rope.

Why bring a shovel?
What size winch and wire size?
Why do Warn winches cost so much?
How to mount to the sled's front?
Which controller...handlebar, wired or wireless remote?

you bring a shovel for a LOT of GOOD reasons. you need one to dig someone out of an avy. you need one for building a snow shelter in an emergency. there are a number of occasions when they can help to dig out around the sled, then stomp down as you mentioned. winch's ain't light.....no interest in adding at least 15, probably closer to 20 pounds. haven't seen a stuck yet that a group wasn't able to get out of without one.......plus, unless you are in the trees it may be worthless since there isn't anything to attach cable too.

3 guys can get most sleds out w/o much issue on most stucks. A little stomping, pulling and throttle takes care of it. When I'm stuck on my own, my jack is worth it's weight in gold.

You can mount one on any sled, here's mine.

A shovel is for more than stuck

It is listed above but I'll repeat it. A shovel is used for much more than getting un-stuck. As for a winch, There have been many times that I've thought about it but never wanted to weight. Last year, two of us got snobunji's. Wow, we were amazed. If you hook one on each ski and give a tug you can pull out almost anything. We had one sled try to jump a creek and fail. The back was sitting in the water, the skis were pointing almost straight up on a 4 ft. bank. Hooked on the bunjis and drove the sled right out. Used to roll, dig, stomp... Roll, dig, stomp. No more.

Skibreeze, sorry to hear about your leg. My wife did the same thing last Sunday. Really puts a damper on the season.
