struggling

Howdy, I'm struggling with a few things. I have snow checked a new M8 but I'm wondering if I made the right decision. I'm a bigger guy and thought the new m8 162" with the extra power would do the trick but after talking to some dealers who have been riding them this spring none seem too excited about the new m8 and all three dealers I have talked to say the m1000 still outperforms it. I am a little dispointed and was hoping they would say how awesome the new m8 is. Has anyone directly ridden the new m8 162" and an 09 m1000 162" ? What am I looking at for 15hp difference? What is the weight difference between the 2? just curious to gauge the power to weight ratio. Thanks for any info. PS im not worried about the cost between the 2 as they are close.

Im 6'2 235 pounds with all my gear on and i found that the M8 is easier to maneuver than the m1000 seems to be little more front endd heavy thats ny opinion

Thanks for replying. How about the power, was there a huge difference? I know there will be more bottom end on the m1000 but I just want to be able to hang with my skinny buddies on there XP's.

Probably is going to depend on the type of riding you do. The noticeable difference between the 8 and the 1000 is the hill climbing. Boondocking - people will say the 8 - but I am accustomed to my 1000 and have no problems in the trees.

i had the same decision when i was looking at the 09's. i'm 6 3 and 240 and everyone i talked to at Cutlers said get the 1000. i came off an xp and the 1000 feels lighter to me than the xp did. it's not the stock for stock difference that i looked it.... it's the difference in mods. look at how well the 1000 motor responds to a full exhaust compared to an m8. same with a turbo. i put a can and a boss seat on my m1000 and it now weighs the same as an m8 and still have the 1000 hp. with how nimble the m chassis is, i suggest anyone get the 1000 because the little extra weight isn't noticable in a great chassis like this one

m8

I think the m8 will be awesome. If you want to mod the m1000 will be the ticket it is a sleeping giant. With your weight manuvering should not be a problem.Either way you will like it better than the xp.JMO

1000 all the way, weigh around 240-260 with gear on and the 800 is just not enough when the going gets tough. When we ride with smaller sleds I can go anywhere they go and most the time better in the trees because not always holding the flipper to the bar like the 800's. The 1000 will work well in the trees and being a bigger guy you will not notice the weight because the power easily keeps it going. Mod for mod the 1000 will make a poop pile of hp and will boondock easily and climb some pretty hairy stuff. Not the answer you wanted to hear but thats my comparison as own both and ride both. Sure they are not 2010 models but still basically same chassis and ones a 800 and the other was a 1000 now a 1200.

if...

So far all three dealers I have talked to have not been overly pumped about the new 800 engine and the new M8 power. All have said it still does not compare to the M1000. I guess i was hoping for a little more enthusiasm from the guys who have allready ridden them.

The difference between the 2 is the 200 cc's as above mentioned. This makes a world of a difference when it comes to torque. Myself I weigh about 250ish with my gear on. I bought the 09 m1000 this year. I came off of a 06 m7-900 Big Bore (still have it). Ive done a few mods and lightened it up quite a bit. we did some quick calculations and figure my 1000 weighs about 440 dry. Now the 1000 is way heavy on the front end, so the mods I did were to lighten up the front end. BDX headlight delete, timbersled intake, skis, low cut winshield. Now I was priveleged enough to have both of my sleds out on the mountain 1/2 dozen times this season together for comparison and I couldnt honestly tell that the 1000 as more front heavy. Ive done minor mods to my 1000 power wise(D&D pipe setup) and the m7 is modded to fu@$%ck!! the 1000 otruns it and is more reliable because of minor modding. If need I still have tons of room for improvement. If I had bought an m8 it would have cost me way more money to get it to out perform my M9. Catch what Im throwin? yes a 1000 will cost you more at the start but the potential and Handling of it is awesome. If yer a big guy an m8 isnt enough, not taking anything away from it. An m8 is the best sled on the mountain side with a 160lb rider on it as is or equal to a m1000 with a 220 + rider. Good luck with yer choice its not to late to get ahold of yer dealer and switch................
Below is a pic of a hill In Alaska, all the ,marks going over are from m1000'swith only a lightweight can on each and a pipe setup on mine. The low loop is from a m8 completely stock all with equal weight riders. Pictures dont do justice but that is 1 friggin steep hill!!!

2010 m8

All the reviews i read were very positive about the new m8 as far as power and clutching.MY concerns are how reliable is the new 800 HO and will it put out the power arctic cat says.

If you think about it the 2010 m8 at 163 hp is just a really good twin piped m8. Ill bet there isnt much a guy can do to get more HP out of it other than a turbo or some NO2

I own both the 1000 and an 8 and put 1300 miles on the 8 and 30 on the 1000 this year 'cause the 8 is so much more fun. It's not as torque-y and doesn't have the long legs that the 1000 has but the motor just runs better. Revs faster, makes power faster. But it depends if you like climbing higher or being able to flick the sled around.

09 m1000 162 around 200 "rated" hp and figured to be 456lbs with everything except gas. all together I have less than $11,500 in it. m8 just not enough for the way I ride and feel heavier because of the power loss. the motor is 15lbs heavier on the 1000 than the m8 other than that they are the same. The crank is bigger bulkier with a longer stroke and it holds more antifreeze. It all depends on what you want.

There is no repacement for displacement. Torque is the key when comparing the two. The M8 is easier to throw around at the end of the day, but imagine going up a steep, long, and narrow chute. Which one do you want to be on? The M1000 EVERY TIME. Love my 09 M1000. Best sled I've owned.

I'd be a little suspicious, first off how many in the box 1000's do these dealers have?

Ditto here but I weigh about 180, same comment from my wife at 105lbs.
Just bought my wife a turbo M8 & she says she hardly notices the difference (aside from the power from the turbo)

I'd go for the 8 as long as it has a turbo, otherwise I couldn't step down to an 8.

Edit, one thing to keep in mind: a lot of the guys that prefer the 8 seem to be lower altitude riders or riders that ride in stiffer snow. I see a lot of 8's in AK, ID, and other places where they're riding at 4 or 5 k or lower. Get up to the high elevations & the preference seems to change a bit. (not completely by any means, but you notice more up high)
