Strange part identification please

Can someone tell me what this snap ring on my marzocchi fork is for? It seems to not really do anything.

it was for the fork guard . so the guard don't slide on the fork

Protect your fork tubes with the guards. You don't want to get dings on them. Your seals will then leak oil

But there aren't any rocks flying at them in the snow so what would the protection be from? Seems the risk is from packing snow behind them. Although pictures of Snowbike's I see tend to run more in your camp with guards still on if that's any indication.

Wet coastal snow will pack up in your fork guards like crazy. I guess that is one more advantage our friends in the rockies have on us.

I've thought about trying some wrap -around ktm fork guards. My Kawasaki guards tear out bolt holes and tip forward as snow packs in......

Well that's interesting. I think I'll run with them off. I did install some of those neoprene covers over the seals
