strange noise

Just had a clutch removed at the dealer and they beat up the crank as well. they replaced it under warranty and now i have a strange noise coming from what sounds like the mag side. i don't hear it at idle and it seems to change pitch if i brake, slow or speed up. it reminds me of having a panel pushed into the clutch as it spins...kind of like a lathe. should i be worried about the crank? what else might cause this noise?

Check for something that is up against your jackshaft or brake rotor as well. What year? Chaincase or belt drive. If it is silent at idle and changes pitch with speed it could be something along those lines.

2012 pro w/ chain case. I didn't see anything on the brake rotor but i'll take a closer look tomorrow. one thing i found strange was that there's a lite film of grease being slung from the bolt on the secondary clutch.

Too much anti-seize on the jack shaft? If they beat on the crank, are they that ambitious? If they had the crank out, could be lots of causes.

Sounds like a fair new / green mechanic at the dealer, could be a host of things depending on what he touched.

First thing I would check is the chain tension, easiest to grab the brake disk or driven clutch and try to turn it both directions and see if you can feel any slack before the sled wants to move. If he overtightened the chain it can make a whining / whirring sound / noise and would / could be similar to your description. Typically the disk should rotate 3/16" or 1/2 a cm radially with the chain tensioned correctly. If less then loosen it, if more then tighten it.

Sounds to me like the noise the brake rotor/calipers make after a few miles, how many miles on the sled?

i'm getting about an 1/8" or less of movement at the brake rotor. i'll adjust it on my weekend and see if that was the problem. is there any reason the dealer would mess with the chain tension?

this is a used sled with 1500 miles that i have never been on before the dealer replaced the primary and the crank, so i have nothing to compare it to before. it seems a little tighter than my 08 dragon.

you're probably right about the green mechanic. the belt it had on it was done and they asked if they could replace it. well, i said yes and they just slapped one on without adjusting it. i didn't think to check it until i felt the sluggish throttle response and heard the belt squeal. it was noticeably, about a quarter inch, high above the sheaves.

I had a chaincase cover bolt back out and contact the brake rotor. It was a hideous noise.

1500 miles. i only pulled it on the trailer before they replaced the crank, so not sure if it was doing it before.

i think the chain case looks to have proper tension after looking at it. the rotor doesn't appear to have any striations in it either. the dealer says to bring it back in and they'll look at it. i hope it's nothing internal.

Check the back side of your break rotor for grooves. I also had a bolt back out against the rotor on my 11 Pro.

i took it in to the dealer and they listened to it on the stand. they said the noise was typical with the 2012 due to the tight brake tolerances.

i have not looked at the back of the rotor though. i will check that out next but i hope i'm just over reacting. i do know that the other 2012 in the group was not this noisy.

Does the noise stop if you lightly apply the brake while on the throttle? That would eliminate the brake pads if the noise doesnt change.
