Stop washing your hands!

RIP Brian
How much of what we grew up with is now the wrong thing to do? Margarine VS butter, sachrine vs sugar, dietairy recomendations ( rember the scene in Back to the future where they were saying you should eat meat like bacon or ham for breakfast?) Now comes this! Dirty is good and healthy. If this proves out, everything will change. It's worth a read.

remember those commercials where they showed people's hands under UV light and all the bacteria on them, then they washed their hands with a particular soap and put them under the UV again and basically no bacteria. ever notice you don't seem those any more. fact is, you are SUPPOSED to have bacteria on your skin. just a mtter of which one is all. by washing off all the good bacteria, people have been leaving themselves open to more oppurtunistic(sp?) bacyeria, and thus more infections, disease etc.. now, this is not too say you shouldn't wash your hands after taking a crap, but just use normal soap, not that anti-bacterial stuff, unless of course you work in a hospital, but that's a whole different can of worms

Being in the health care field, sometimes, my first thought is that health care providers should be very safe as we are exposed to everything all the time.

agreed, but does that mean killing the natural to let in the harmful, also thus lowering your own natural immunity? this is a very hard question, and one i'm sure will be debated over sooner or later

I guess I'm pretty healthy then! I can see it, though. It allows your body to build up immunities so that when you do get a descent hit of a disease, it doesn't kill ya!

i should live forever!

according to this i should live forever then! Back in wisconsin i was in the barn almost since the day i was born. but this is true, i have noticed that in high school i never stayed home becuase i was sick, i always stayed home to work.

heh, i work with a few clean-freaks... afraid to get their hands dirty... I never understood that...

Not that I'll dive into a cesspool, but a little bit of dirt or grease never hurt anyone...

Could also be a toughness thing... not being afraid to get dirty means you'll cowboy up a bit more than someone who is paranoid about keeping clean

there is a difference between clean freaks and washing your frequently. I will gamble and keep washing.

Known this for years. That's why people who are outdoors all the time and lead an active lifestyle are healthier than those who are couped up in the house ever since they were little kids.

Living on the farm we see this a lot and it was evidenced as we grew up. We were out in the muck and mud and manure and what have you. Never hurt us to eat a piece of pizza that sat on top of the stove overnight, or to thaw the turkey in water overnight(which I think as of recent they have reversed their stance on that as well), or eat a local favorite called "Tigermeat" which consists of raw eggs, raw ground sirloin, crackers, salt, peppers, and a few other ingredients. The list goes on.

..I ate a raw pork chop once.(Alcohol WAS a factor)..Got sicker than hell:eek::(

This is no different than the people that get sick all the time IMO. They get sick and they always go to the doctor and they get sick again the next year with the same thing. Suck it up, drink plenty of fluids, a little Nyquil to put you out and you're good to go. That's my philosophy. I don't go to the doctor unless I've been really sick for a day at least. I can't remember the last time I was sick, all I ever get is a 1-2 day cold in the spring and or fall, the temperature swing messes with my immune system big time.

a friend of mine and his wife are probably the "healthiest" people i know. eat right, lots of exercise, organic foods blah blah blah, and we are always saying they are the sickest healthy people i know. all winter they are sick. never ceases to amaze me

haha listen to george carlin about germaphobes....thats a good one. We used to swim in the east fork of the desmoines river...nothing like a dip in the deep green. Now the ol antibodies are built to the hilt! No second chance BS for bad germs...one infraction INTO THE COLON YOU GO!

Nobody has mentioned viruses yet. Most of your common colds this time of year are viral, not bacteria.

I also think that a major contributer to getting sick is touching your eyes/nose/mouth with your hands. It gives the bacteria/virus an entry point.
Someone sneezes or coughs into their hand, then grabs the doorknob, then you come along behind them and touch the doorknob, then rub your eyes. Bingo, a few days later you are sick. Person to person transmission is certainly a major factor in spreading cold viruses.

I work in the healthcare field also and I will keep washing my hands. I do think there is definetely something to building up immunity through exposure to all of the crap though. That which doesn't kill you makes you stronger...
